At the suggestion of Blademasterbobo, I started to watch The Tatami Galaxy.

As far as anime series go, its fairly atypical. I got more of a Persepolis vibe from it than any other anime I've seen. The colors change depending on the mood of the scene, and it does a lot of visually interesting things. It's a real treat to watch. The story follows a young college man who suffers from acute loneliness and an inability to talk to women. The 'gimmick' of the series is that each episode details the events of his life had he joined a different college club. It runs at a breakneck speed, and I often had to pause to read the subtitles, but it's a strange combination of humor and (really) depressing moments, some of which resonated with me more than I would have liked.

So good. I was put off by the obvious way it is based on a card game; after the first episode I was rolling my eyes at the way they would obviously reference game mechanics and such. And the way there seems to be a whole lot of disparate story elements and themes (Joan of Arc, ancient dragons, angels and demons, Bacchus somehow? and a duck?) After the second episode my girlfriend and I decided we'd seen enough.

Then the next time we sat down to watch anime we were both just like, "...i think we should watch episode three" and it turns out we'd both been thinking about it for days.

It's definitely got some charm. I can't quite work out what I like so much about it but I hope it keeps it up!

What, really? The only thing I saw is the Bounty Hunter targets turning into cards of sorts when defeated.  Shrug

Well I was probably just prejudging it and reading into things. But it does have a very "gamified" format similar to a lot of TV/film aimed at younger audiences these days. Think of the first episode - protagonist meets boss character, who summons some kind of fire creature (plays a fire-type card). Protagonist uses barrels of oil (plays a trap/counter card). It all felt pretty contrived - "oh, there's a puddle of water on the floor. Better breathe on it to evaporate it. Oh no ! It was oil !"

The allusion to gamey stuff hasn't really gone away (think of the little girl who plays a "zombie deck") but it's a lot less contrived, and, well, everything else about the show is great. Actually developing characters, excellent animation, general fun times and a strong sense of humour.

Wow I haven't watched anime in months after starting Haibane Renmei (which I still need to finish), guess I just didn't find the time to watch it.

So I started up Gosick on a recommendation from a friend.
It's a mystery horror kind of thing, set in a fictional country between France and Germany. It's got over the top characters that I like and the opening animation is Mucha-esque which is pretty great

Anyone watching shingeki no bahamut?

tried to watch this. such an incredibly boring show. and while some of the animation is really good, the show still manages to look really bad like 30% of the time? pacing is terrible too.
