I wish they'd whitewash the whole damn thing so it's just not about Japan. It's the only way to stop this from being a complete trainwreck. What are they going to do, say that it's still Kusanagi but she just likes being in a white body? And the same goes for nearly everyone else in the cast, except maybe one Japanese person and two Korean-Americans...
I think this is my nightmare scenario.

http://boueibu.com/us/index.html@elvaquero, what about a black, philipino or latino kusanagi? Why always white? not all american are white! It's not like Asian have good representation in the us either, they are the model minority but has the worst representation overall! And you want them Token in their own creation. BTW it's not about jap, it's about that there is talented asian women who can fit the role better, even asian american (yes those are still american) Why they can't have this one?

Because GITS is a lot about Japan, from a Japanese perspective. It's about a government agency ferchrissakes!
Because of that I think ANY live action adaptation is a bad idea. But I mean, I guess if it has to be, then I think they would probably need a Japanese (or Japanese-descended as you rightly pointed out) person for the majority of the main roles.
(I was just saying white because ScarJo is)

I wouldn't say GITS is only about japan though, there is much more to it even though japan geopolitics helpt shape the mythology, but it focus more on fictional politics with common problem across most democratic political system, corporation which aren't country specific, and cybernetics impact on human metaphysics. I think it's easily adaptable, the GITS estate itself have made 4 different retelling of the exact same plot (metaphysics with the movie, technological-mystic with the manga and social and personal with the two oav series stand alone complex and arise).

Yea, it'll still look pretty ridiculous if they don't at least futz with the setting/premise a bunch. The material is definitely malleable enough, as long as they hit those themes. I sincerely hope they don't just try to do it straight from the first movie, but with a random white person as the lead/leader. That's all I'm saying
Also, did you guys know that James Cameron's next big project before he got sidelined with Avatars was a live action Battle Angel Alita? That would be insane but I'd have way higher hopes for it because of the non-specific setting

I don't know that a GITS live action movie is really a good idea, I don't really see what they could do with it. I wonder if they are comparing Kusunagi to the character Johans plays in the Avengers either way I don't have high hopes for this movie.
this looks cool though! Kusunagi's design here reminds me of the original GITS movie but I don't know if it has anything to do with the movie series.

Personally, I can't say that I've ever been too fussed about the ethnicity of the characters in a live action adaptation of anything, so long as they don't screw with the source material.
However, this seems a near-impossible ask.
