I thought this whole project:13 Kickstarter seems cool. From the music and animation in the video, it looks promising.

Akumetsu is a great read. On a simlar dark vibe theres Shamo which is really violent and pretty fucking grim but wonderfully illustrated. I'd put it in the same vein as Vagabond. If you want something that could potentially make you think and is a more character focused then Homunculus is interesting. http://mangafox.me/manga/homunculus/

Reading through Shamo... man, this story's really messed up...
It's interesting how a character as vile and base as Ryo Narushima can still be relatable... and sometimes even likeable...

Somewhat disappointed by Shamo. At first it seems like its going to be this dark, brooding tale about survival in Japan's criminal underbelly (with a dash of social commentary), but it just ends up being a typical shonen "FIGHT TO BE THE STRONGEST" manga after the first 40 chapters.

Mmm, its great for a while... personally I enjoyed it till the monk fight as after that I think it switches magazines or something, eitherway they did something to reset "powerlevels".
Still, has some goodness floating around in there!
Vagabond is better though, if youre into that kinda thing.

You mean the fight where he learns chi projection from a Master Roshi lookalike and then kills Son Goku?

Yeah, I really enjoyed it up to that part and then it felt like gantz all over again, where a character has been the focus and grown upto this point only to suddenly go poof.
Would have been nice to start rounding out the story of shamo at that point as he had truely matured and became more wise.
Oh well.
^ Thats something that Vagabond is doing very well, i love it.

I ran out of localized 80s & 90s horror/supernatural anime to watch, so I started grabbing some fan-subbed stuff that doesn't even have English titles. Some of it is very interesting, and it makes me wish I was part of some small community of people who are into the same stuff as I am, so we could seek out the most obscure films and anime and share them with each other... I like turning people on to great stuff they haven't heard of, but given the tastes of this particular thread I don't know if I'd just be throwing my pearls before swine or not... I really don't like 90% of what gets posted in this thread :|
It's all got that "I'M SO YOUNG 'N HIP, CHECK MY STYLEE, BROZ! THIS ANIME IS A WILD, FLASHY, IN-YOUR-FACE RIDE OVER THE TOP OF A LOW-ORBITING SPACE STATION AND BACK, EL MIGOZ! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to proceed to do something totally RANDUM! (lol) and QUIRKY! (rofl) while I sit on the floor with my legs tucked in, spinning around and saying "UGUU~~ UGUUU~~~" oh wait. now hold on just a sec, it's time for me to be all hot and mysterious as i stare out and rehash my adolescent problems inwardly while staring out at the same generic sunset that's been used for facking aeonzzzzz... *SNORE*

Good thing you dismissed Punpun, Akumetsu, Shamo and Vanguard out of diiotic arguments.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it up to that part and then it felt like gantz all over again, where a character has been the focus and grown upto this point only to suddenly go poof.
Personally, the moment Ryo was able to project Chi was when the series lost all sense of realism. It turned the very grounded, very visceral/realistic fights (he has to take dangerous steroids in order to be able to compete) into... something else. Ryo turned into a superhuman... and I didn't like that. And then a few chapters later, the writer goes "okay, yeah, this is way too much power", then tones it down to where Ryo can hardly even beat the shit out of an old man. The story blames it all on "being out of practice", but how much strength can you lose in the span of a few months? I mean, it's been <9 months from when Ryo rapes Sagawara's girlfriend to the fight with the dancer guy... how much skill can you lose?
