So, I'm going to be visiting a friend of mine in a week, and I wanted to get suggestions for fun indie games we can play multiplayer on one laptop using a couple of USB game pads.

Zero Gear seems like a promising candidate, but I don't know if it supports game pads or local multiplayer. Any suggestions?

My company's games might be a bit casual for you, but we actually do a lot of multi-player-on-one-machine games because they do fantastically well for us (Bad Ice Cream and Mutiny I think are the best ones):

Is nidhogg playable on one machine?

There was a thread a while back compiling a lot of good local multiplayer games, but I'm not sure how many of them allow gamepads.  You could probably use Xpadder or Joy2Key to add gamepad support if you don't mind some initial setup.

Super Smash Land Smiley
Trine(!), Clonk, Mr. Blocko Tournament, Action Fist!, Magicka (not sure if it supports local play), Bennu, Forget-Me-Not

And a personal retro favorite of mine, Marshmallow Duel (You probably need DOSBox to play it nowadays):

Gamepad support mostly shouldn't be a problem. Even if a game only supports keyboard, JoyToKey should have you covered.

Good call. My only concern is with trying to use that in a game that doesn't support windowed mode. Have you done that before?

Yeah, I love Liero!

Also, here are all the multiplayer games on TIGdb:

There's a tag specifically for offline multiplayer, but only a handful of games are properly tagged with it right now.

Cortex Command has 4-player gamepad support, although it takes a little getting used to its controls.

Good call! Found Treasure Treasure--I'd forgotten about that one. That should be perfect.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

I don't see why windowed mode would be necessary. You can set up JoyToKey at any time, for example before you even start the game, and it will just hide in the background while it's running. It isn't tied to a specific game at all, you just create a profile that translates certain gamepad button presses to keyboard button presses.

There are a couple that are really great:

General Conflict:
- Fun bomberman+Smash Bros kinda action. Fun for a little while

Team Fortress Arcade
- Sidescrolling Co-Op Beat'm Up with TF2 characters and weapons.

0Space
- Amazing Multi-player Death-match in zero gravity.
(replays aren't working, but game is tons of fun in its own right.)

Still looking for games that rival their quality.
