Hi! Well, first of all, hi to everyone, most of you don't know because this is my first post (outside my introducion post)! I admit that I'm writing dreading that this is the wrong forum or something like that, forum etiquette is something I can't seem to get a hold of completely.

Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden? Nah, just kidding I actually don't know of any particularly good sports/RPG hybrids, so this thread will be interesting to read.

Initial D: Another Stage (GBA) is similar to Tecmo Cup/Captain Tsubasa, but with drifting instead of soccer. It's in Japanese, but an English translation guide exists if you don't know the language. Gameplay video (YouTube)Another (more well-known) example is the River King series, which takes an RPG-inspired approach to fishing.

I believe a number of the Konami baseball games have an RPG-like Career mode where you gain stats depending on your training regimen and decisions you make during events and such. Captain Tsubasa games were pretty awesome.

The Inazuma Eleven games seem to be doing pretty well in Japan- there's a European version, so I'd love to import that.
From my childhood, I recall loving the Mario Tennis game for the GBC- you played a human character who you could level up in training exercises, almost like Tony Hawk. It was quite addictive.

The recent NBA 2K games have a "My Player" mode in which you create your own avatar. You start off with physical features, and move on to setting your position between guard or forward or whatever and playstyle from within that position. After your chararcter's been created, you start off in the lowly development leagues playing games there till you get signed or drafted to an NBA team. Practice mini-games allow you to level up specific skills and doing well in games nets you more xp and skill points.
I mean you have to like basketball to get into it since it's a simulation game, but yeah, it's pretty cool. I didn't think playstyle'd make that much of a difference, but it actually caps different skills at different levels so that you can't have a guard posting up Dwight Howard or a 3 point shooting center if you established yourself as a back to the basket player.

Dodge Danpei! It's an obscure NES dodgeball game based on an obscure old anime. And the matches play like a card-based strategy/RPG hybrid. Also, the games were made by Sunsoft, so if you love that chunky Sunsoft bass (and I know you do) it's worth checking out.

New Star Soccer, perhaps? It's a game where you play a single soccer player, and can move between teams, train or socialize in your time off, buy stuff with your salary money, etc. Not quite an RPG, more of a management game where you manage a single player. But it's a similar concept.
