Thx guys! And yep, I'm now working back on Moonman. Things you can look forward to in the next release (0.4):
- Chunk-dependant backgrounds
- 4 mobs with damage, health, and spawning
- crossbow/projectile weapon
- two moons
- crafting
- music
- and much more
It's a big goal, as each of those items requires a whole lot of new functionality. But hopefully it will be out by the end of May. Stay tuned to this thread for incremental updates, which I'm aiming to do weekly now.

atm the background is just one image that is tiled, i want to add a feature so that a foresty area can have a forest-type background, the oceany area can just be empty, an underground cavern can have a cave-type background etc. and chunks are just a unit i use to split up the world, equal to 256x256 blocks. actually it'll be more like quarter-chunk dependant backgrounds.

That's too much moon.

They are an integral part of the longer dynamics of the game. You'll see... :D

Update: More work on MoonPixel. Can now add/remove/edit modes of a part. An example of a part is a sword, and its modes are the different configurations/animations it has, e.g., chop, held, raised. An entity like moonman is a sprite/composite that is a bunch of parts connected together (arms, legs, heads, etc.) each with their own modes. I'm hoping this low-res sprite tool will be useful to other low-res game devs, but my priority right now is to get it to a state where i can fix up existing animations and quickly iterate on new items and creatures.

Update: Completed more work on the sprite editor. The screenshot shows 2 parts (body, sword) and 1 composite (man), with the anchors 'a' and pivot '1' showing in the individual parts, and you can see they line up in the composite. The composite will be editted just through the table on the right, manually entering part names and specifying z-orders and pivots. The widgets also update based on their dependencies, so e.g., you can draw on the sword and the man composite updates immediately.

Update: Did a bunch more work on the sprite editor. E.g., Saving and Loading project files is now supported. The file format is just a .tar file (shown on the right) which contains all the sprite frames as pngs and the part and composite specifications as a json file (the program preferences are also saved.) If there's interest I'll definitely try to release this either as a free standalone sprite editor, or packaged with moonman for user modding.

INTEREST!  Gentleman

Preferably as a standalone - this looks super helpful.

Very nice. I have no talent for sprite art unfortunately. I've tried, I've failed, hah.

If it'll be usable for sprites bigger than 6x5 pixels then I'll be interested.

The screenshot already contains sprites that are bigger than 6x5 pixels.
