@DavidCaruso: I am under the impression that you are an icycalm follower, but I don't think I've seen anything from you regarding that so I don't really know why. Didn't you join around the ESB thread? IDK. As for your posts, they are intelligent, incisive, and eloquent. You make bad (good) jokes and I appreciate your input into the forum. Compared to most modern game enthusiasts around here (shig, eva, etc) you are a lot more willing to give indies a chance. I like that. I'd say that you are actually one of my favorite posters, even if I disagree with you, just because you tend to be a bit more forgiving and intelligent. Good show.

Thanks, man. Joining near the ESB thread was a coincidence, and it was an acquired taste over time, but you could definitely say I'm a "follower" at this point. I'm not really a modern game "enthusiast;" there are still a few great games coming out every year and some genres are still advancing forward, but on the whole I feel like the industry has regressed since, say, a decade ago, and many of the games in my (stupidly huge and ever-growing) backlog are older titles. I can't say I really like the "indie" label/separation or some aspects the scene seems to have (stigma on being "derivative," heavily played-up "retro" games with infinite lives and checkpoints every 15 seconds, delusions of more creative control and "independent spirit," etc.), and I've been underwhelmed by most of the major titles I've played (though there are a few good/great ones), but it's pretty cool as an extension of the general amateur game dev community (which I think it's pretty much become the center of at this point, save specialized forums like the GMC or Daily Click). Even in terms of just talking about games or chatting with cool people I'll take this forum over NeoGAF or GameFAQs or whatever any day.

I realized where your opinions are coming from a long time ago, but I'm cool with it because you speak for yourself instead of just regurgigating what Zirbas says.

@Inanimate: You are a cool dude and a good mod. Not as good as me, but I'm the best there ever was, so...  Cool

B-but I didn't even post here. Thanks for the compliments, anyways. I definitely am not as good of a mod as you two, either. It's hard to keep up! (And I'm obviously not as mature)

@Ashkin: I remember when you joined and were an annoying little brat. I'm glad you've since matured, and Mining Game looks pretty neat! You're still a little irritating from time to time, but out of all the little baby children that have been here, I'd say you are probably the one who has "progressed" the most.
Aw, shucks. I'm glad I'm not as annoying as I used to be.

i had no idea you even read icycalm but i don't really pay attention to stuff like that

also i agree with this post, but with one exception: i don't think you can call it a delusion that indies have more creative freedom if the vast majority of people who quit the industry to form their own indie companies say they did it for creative freedom (there was a thread about a poll on this)

of course the same amount of creativity is possible in either setting, it's just that the creative decisions are restricted to a few people the larger the team size is, so those in a large team who are not in the higher ranks in a game company would have less freedom than the director of that team (e.g. hideo kojima has creative freedom, but the guy coding the animations for the snakes in snake eater eater does not have as much)

only a small percent of indies are ex-industry (probably around 15%), but a disproportionate number of successful indie games are made by ex-industry people

Even for a designer who would be lower rank than kojima, 'industry' vs 'indie' is a trade off between types of freedom: industry adds the constraint of needing to satisfy more bosses/customers/etc, but removes some resource constraints.  Whether that's a win or a loss just depends on what it is you want to accomplish -- you could plausibly transition either way for 'more freedom' (meaning less design constraints)

@Alevice: You seem to spend a lot of time in the Technical forum and don't really get dragged into the knuckleduster brawls in General or Games. That's a pretty good thing. Your avatar is slightly disconcerting and your posts are neither enlightening or offensive. They just... are.

I agree on everything, except on browsing on Technical, specially since I browse creative boards more.

Most commercial industry games I've enjoyed recently were made by smaller developers without a fixed publishing deal, such as From Software, Treasure and Cave.
Shrug

In terms of "indie" games, I highly doubt the most recent ones I've played, namely Frozen Synapse, ADOM and Dwarf Fortress, could ever come out of the mainstream industry as it currently is.
