So Rage apparently came out today in the US. I've been sort of keeping an eye on this game ever since it was announced and would be interested to hear what my TIGbros and sisters from the US think about it.
So have any of you bought the game?

I was planning to get it today with Dark Souls but due to some money issues, it will have to wait.
I've heard mixed things from reviewers though. It sounds like it's a fun SHOOTER, but a lot of people were expecting more of an RPG (Fallout, Borderlands, etc) and are now disappointed that it's not. At least, that's what I've taken away from the reviews I've read.
It's still high up on my list of games to get, but I'm definitely keeping an eye on what the public thinks about it.

I was never really expecting an RPG, more like an "open world" FPS in the style Far Cry and Crysis. I bet it has lameass modern shooter features like regen health and limited inventory tho, but whatever.

re open world, this review seems to say it's not that open: RAGE splits itself into first-person combat and third-person vehicular sections. Taking a rather formulaic structure, general progress consists of heading into town, taking on a mission, driving to a "dungeon" area and killing a lot of things. This pattern repeats itself from beginning to end, in a world that looks quite open but tends to be shockingly small and restricted. There are huge chasms, open mountains and wide fields, but the they are inaccessible and exist only as window dressing. There's a linearity to the game that seems at odds with the world's open appearance. This is a problem that's only compounded when you realize how devoid of exploration that world truly is -- there is one small city area for each half of the game, and the dungeon locations sit at the ends of a meager selection of straightforward paths. One wonders why the illusion of an open world was put in place -- I'm all for linear experiences, but not when they're pretending to be something they're not, and offering the vision of something far larger than it is.

OK that's disappointing. Doom 3 already felt like a mediocre tech demo and now it looks like it's the same with Rage. id are so far up their own asses making engines these days that they forget to actually make good GAMES with these engines.

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this but are the console versions worth a shit? My only computer at the moment is a puny laptop that has no chance in hell of running the game and that's not going to change anytime soon due to money constraints.

I'll be picking it up later today, I pre-ordered it with Dark Souls. I'll let you know what I thought of it after I give it a good couple of hours of play time. Well, the PS3 version anyways.

He's been using the same excuse for years now. As a programmer it's his job to tackle this before releasing the game.

Here is the talk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zgYG-_ha28#t=26m25sCarmack already address the pc version problem (hint driver edit: driver doing shit in your back) in his talk at quakecon.
He's been using the same excuse for years now. As a programmer it's his job to tackle this before releasing the game. He can't, it's a matter of having direct access to memory which card vendor don't give and you have to go through buggy driver that change all the times (especially after dev time). SO console are better because programmer have full control and don't have to relied on middle men. If you have a solution ...

The bit of the talk you linked is about overhead on a PC, not driver bugs. It sounds like driver updates have been rushed out by amd, and some will come from nvidia as well -- it's a bit surprising that they couldn't coordinate that before launch, but if it gets sorted out in a few days it's not that horrible. edit: and rps says the new amd driver basically works (though some ability to tweak graphics settings is missing due to id being silly or something) http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/05/working-rage-ati-fix-now-out/#more-76338

I'm going to hopefully try this out tonight if my Steam download doesn't pause and then die again.

Just a word of warning for PS3 users, Rage is a mandatory 8GB install (which I am currently undertaking).
I figured I'd set down Dark Souls for a little bit and give it a try (before running back to Dark Souls like a crack addict to a mountain of crack).
Update:
I am strongly reminded of BioShock while playing this game, but in the best of ways. It has that same "you are some place specific" vibe and the visuals and sounds are just plain awesome. The NPCs are of the "Hey buddy, go here and do this!" sort but there is a lot of charm in their facial expressions and mannerisms (and the voice acting is not bad at all).
It's kind of a bummer how you are corralled in the environments, I guess Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3, etc. got me thinking I can go anywhere and jump on anything but that isn't the case here, you are quite often greeted by "invisible walls". It definitely leans more towards FPS/Twisted Metal than an RPG.
Any disappointments I started to develop quickly melted away once I got to the first conflict area (about 8-10 minutes in). The enemies don't just stand there waiting to be abused, they run at you, jump at you, roll at you, leap off walls and obstacles at you, and zig zag all over the place making even the melee opponents a pretty good threat.
They react to wherever and however you shoot them. Hit them in the legs they stumble. Shoot them in the head and they stagger about blindly for a moment. Hit them in the shoulder and it throws their body off-balance. Combined with the crazy ways they move about and use the environment it really makes the combat feel challenging and intense.
I am really liking the game thus far.

Abysmal performance; Crysis 2 ran infinitely smoother and I'm pretty sure it looked better, too. Horrible frame rate, screen tearing, texture pop-in, unresponsive controls, nauseatingly low field of vision... Endured maybe five minutes then uninstalled all 20 gigs of it.
