If you are more 2d guy
If it's your first game
If you have few technical skills
If your brain is like some dry potato
If you miss some precise ideas about the key points of the game
If you haven't a team and want to do this on your own

Do an MMORPG

Combine Braid with WoW. Instant hit.

Seriously though, if you're just starting out (sounds like you are), just make a Mario clone or something. Like Strider? Make a Strider clone. A small one. Maybe just one level. Or half a level. Don't worry about being original - why waste your originality on your first (shitty) games anyway? You need experience.

Do you have a 2D art portfolio? I'm a programmer/designer and I've got some small project ideas that could use an artist. See my portfolio so far: http://pupilgame.wordpress.com/other-games/

A turn based rpg focused on playable characters and a large roster. They would be really simple tough, just a portrait and a creative/fun skill/spell/ability.

The player would progress through the game by assembling a team that allows him to beat the final boss.

I still wish I knew where Squidi gets that awesome tile/sprite work from. they seem so kickass, and so flexible. It's the kind of stuff I'd like my own graphic work to be more like.

This makes me laugh.

Well, start with the Strider clone. If other ideas or influences pop up, test them out - that's what'll make your stuff unique. It'd be a great thing to see, too; not enough good Striders, Ninja Gaidens, or RunSabers out there.

DungeonMinder.

The game about being a small invisible fairy tasked with keeping an adventurer alive. Accompany the heroic '@' as he explores the dungeon! Watch as he stupidly picks fights with monsters far stronger than him! Subtly influence the resulting brawl to keep him alive long enough to reach the stairs! Don't ever expect to be thanked for your good plans and hard work.
