The crazy setup process for PlayN is beyond what is normal for Eclipse, so don't judge Eclipse based on what PlayN requires you to do.

Actually that is the root problem.
It's not really Eclipses fault, it's Google. Their stuff is fragile as hell and causes all kinds of problems. You need to use an EXACT version of the ADT or X breaks, which relies on Y which uses a different version of the ADT. FUN FUN FUN
And... PlayN relies on GWT and android tools, which means you have 3 Google dependencies... good luck with that!
Oh, and Maven sucks, or more specifically m2e.
