Or you can put some secret areas right at the start of the game where the player can get to them. Put some pips where the player can't reach them, so they're encouraged to find the secret.

Final Fantasy 4 puts a couple of secret rooms in Baron Castle right at the start of the game, to tease you. That really pumped me to play the rest of the game because I loved seeking out secret switches and passages. The fact that you start with a lengthy exploration sequence (as opposed to FF6's combat-heavy opening) really did set the tone for the game - the exploration was the fun of FF4. It was a good example of an opening.

It could be a dilemma if a game's major selling point is a twist ending or massive reversal of expectations. There's no way, for example, to market the brilliant final level of Braid in a five-minute demo. Braid just had to survive long enough on the clever world designs to get people to play through to the end and sell it on word of mouth.

But on the topic of Seiklus, the secret areas add very little to the game. If you found the pip gathering dull, finding a secret room isn't likely to change your tune much, if at all. A five-minute impression pretty much tells you everything you need to know about it.

So when do they announce this?

I'm in a different time zone and I've no idea what's going on. I'm just lacking faith in the news is all.

Someone tweeted at Nitrome a congrats for winning an award at the Flash Gaming Summit on Sunday and they still haven't updated their site with who won what. We haven't a clue. Hell, even the boss of Nitrome is listed as a judge despite the fact that he was supposed to be not a judge if any Nitrome games got nominated. He still hasn't heard from them.

On that score I just want to make sure that my personal record of never having won an award for anything ever isn't tarnished by the two categories I was in. I want the other guy in the office to get it for his much cleverer game so I can keep up being a miserable bastard.

I'm placing a split bet on Fez and Dear Esther to win an award.

i still hold out hope that the iconoclasts will win all the awards, despite not being a finalist in any of them

also, in that rps article another article is linked to: http://www.develop-online.net/news/40061/GDC-Japanese-dev-mocked-your-games-suck

it'd be okay if it were just himself; wish i knew who that nameless japanese guy was so that i could let him know that not all indies are like that

not that i think japanese games are particularly good this generation, or western games for that matter. it's more the issue of putting one group/nation above another that's the problem. there are good and bad games from every country, even korea, france, china, etc.

and as someone in the comments to that article mentioned, someone could retort "well indie games suck too" -- since most indie games are pretty terrible (and i say this as someone who loves indie games). the majority of any group is not going to measure up to the best things in it

It's publicity. Some go for insanity mixed with large parts of genius. Some play the minority or discrimination card. Certain people, well they go for the Rockstar Attitude.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but my God, Phil is such a fucking douchebag. Yeah Fez looks interesting, but I really don't see why this guy is being so arrogant. His game borrows a lot from games like Cave Story and the Paper Mario series, all of them Japanese games. The current stagnation facing the Japanese game industry is a legitimate topic worthy of discussion, but the way he humiliated that guy was incredibly mean-spirited.

I used to think his game looked nice, but now I just really hate this guy. Reading the RPS article certainly didn't help.

Has anyone actually considered putting together a real indie games awards festival? I saw the #allen Awards but I don't think anything came of that. Would be a nice thing though for sure.
