Has anyone actually considered putting together a real indie games awards festival? I saw the #allen Awards but I don't think anything came of that. Would be a nice thing though for sure.

yes, see most of this thread that you skipped

Where is it? I really don't want to read 90+ pages, unless there's some Icycalm in there.

lol they have an "XBLA Award" now?

Anyway glad to see that (what is increasingly appearing to be) a gimmicky collectathon with "no conflict" won the IGF, truly representing the indiependent spirit here.

Thanks Paul, I'll do some practice!

Is this your child Paul?

Is this your game on the table?

Your sister has a brother.

You're late for the bus!

You're going to learn how to talk.

You're my only son.

Slightly offtopic, but the developer's choice awards are like the IGF part 2; lots of indie nominees and Johann Sebastian Joust just won most innovative. Craziness (yes, I consider Bastion more indie than not.)

Yeah, according to Polytron's "WHAT IS FEZ?" page the main goal of the game is to explore and find treasure in a huge open world. No opposition or anything, and no peril in the platforming. It could still turn out worth playing through if the puzzles are good (puzzling) but my enthusiasm's kinda been decreasing for it over time. Doesn't help that every new trailer just seems to be the camera circling around Gomez in 3D while chiptunes play and Atmosphere™ happens.

hmm, yeah, sounds like it would depend a lot on how good the puzzles are

i don't know how a game can take 5 years and have no enemies or bosses or weapon types or anything. i wonder what's actually taking all that time, besides the art/music resources and level design. maybe it just has a lot of levels

because not all games need violence? wat da eff

if I recall correctly it was not a smooth process. by no means do I know the particulars but I remember hearing/reading fish say they had to restart and revise their workflow/approach a couple times.

Man seriously? From that list I would have given it to Frozen Synapse. Maybe the judges are expendable.

Fez is a pretty novel looking platformer with a kind of innovative element but it's not particularly a standout game or anything.

What's taking YOU so long, Paul? I kickstarted your stuff years ago!

main thing is that some of the team left the project due to lack of time, so i wound up having to do most of the work they were going to do; so what was anticipated as a 1 year long project for 5 people basically became a 5 year long project for 1 person

also just the sheer amount of stuff in the game -- there's about 1000 areas (by world size, the game is about 20x as big as zelda 3), 50 creature types (each of those behaves differently depending on  which of the two game modes the game's currently in -- exploration mode / dream mode), 10 weapon types (same mode variation), 300 pages of dialogue, 3 hours of music, etc. etc. -- i could have cut some of that to release it earlier but i'm a bit of an all or nothing developer

it's also not really comparable because fez has an actual paid team and funding (he took out loans / got grants for hundreds of thousands of dollars), so they can afford to work full time on it. the kickstarter boost of $1500 that the game got helped a lot but was still relatively small

nonetheless i still work on it every day, haven't missed a day since june 2009

Fez winning the IGF came as a shock to nobody and a disappointment to everybody.

Man when I go to GDC or TIGJAM one of these days I'm going to have so many enemies...
