Fuckit.

How about Indie studios winning all the IGF awards, and quite a few GDC awards!

Can a mod rename this thread to the The Big Phil Fish Conundrum?

I don't think there was anything wrong with the comment Phil made about modern Japanese games sucking, whether or not it's factually true. It seems like a valid opinion to hold, and judging by the Japanese reactions to his comment, pretty much 90% of the game-interested Japanese people agree with him. It's a shame the guy who asked the question took it poorly, but he didn't even understand what the word "suck" meant (according to an interview with him on a Japanese site). He was probably just a bit traumatized because it took him a lot of courage to even ask the question in English - which really isn't Phil's fault, I mean, OK, his response was a little rude, but the guy asked the question, and Phil responded honestly.

Totally! I guess the only 1-man-indie-team winner was Storybook for Nuovo? And it's always a treat to see indie games swipe awards away from the big guys. Doug's acceptance speech when Joust won Innovation was excellent!

I also just want to make a few comment about that rockpapershotgun article, there were so many interesting angles left untouched that a better journalist would have picked up on...
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/07/the-competition-the-story-behind-the-igfs-critics/

Quote
Fish knew that re-entering Fez would be controversial even before he did it and admits that he was conflicted about the decision himself. But after asking Brandon Boyer about it and being told the game had changed enough to allow a re-entry, his concerns dissipated. At that point, he says, he knew what the IGF wanted.

Quote
Kale in Dinoland, an iOS port of a Gameboy title from 1992, was only played by five out of eight of its judges. And only one of those played for longer than a few minutes.

There's obviously some bias when Fish can just ask his friend Brandon, the festival manager, if the game is different enough to be entered, while the devs of Kale in Dinoland can hardly get the judges to even look at their game.

Quote
“When it comes to comparing, say, unfinished prototypes from solo developers with finished $100k projects from large teams, I can see why some people would see this as suspicious or unfair,” said another judge. “But I didn’t find this a problem at all… You can get a sense of how far into development the game is, whether the artwork is placeholder, the prior experience of the developers, the budget.

(my emphasis) A judge says he partly judges unfinished games based on what the dev has done previously - and this goes by unquestioned.

i don't think he took it badly at all, he later said in a japanese-language interview and on twitter that it encouraged him to make even better games; he saw it as a challenge

also apparently he's a graphics engine programmer for square-enix, he worked on the graphical engine behind ff13, front mission 4, and lots of other stuff

Just curious, crowe, I'm not familiar with your body of work and I wasn't able to find anything through your profile, but what have you made or worked on? And/or: what would games would you have liked to see in the IGF finalist/winners?

When I said he took it poorly, I based it on what I read in the article I mentioned, he said on twitter he couldn't sleep that night.

yeah but on further thought: have you ever traveled to a country outside of your own timezone (jet lag), in a culture very different than yours? i imagine it'd be pretty hard to sleep the first night here regardless of anything fish said

but what i meant was more like: he took it pretty well considering the circumstances. he was maybe a little upset, but if someone makes a remark to you insulting your country and industry it's natural to be a little upset, but he could easily have taken it worse than he did

there were some reports that he didn't return to his seat after getting the rude reply, but that seems to be a misreport: he returned to a *different* seat than the one he was in, but didn't walk out

Just curious, crowe, I'm not familiar with your body of work and I wasn't able to find anything through your profile, but what have you made or worked on? And/or: what would games would you have liked to see in the IGF finalist/winners?

Not sure why you're singling me out here, but... ok, sure, whatever. I just dabble around with Construct in my spare time; I have other occupations that take up most of my time, so I don't really release anything apart from some stuff in the IGF Pirate Kart and a few little things like that. Why is this relevant?

In any case, I just feel that it's clear games which are made by people who are friends of the judges understandably get more play and exposure -- if nothing else, they've probably played them before because, fuck it, they're friends. That's an advantage that is understandable! But it also means that there should at least be ways to make other judges try their assigned games for an appreciable amount of time; surely an hour is not too harsh even for a game you don't much care for. Signing up to be a judge should be taken as a responsibility, surely?

Off the top of my head I don't remember many of the entrants, but I do recall that Spacechem, one of the best games overall last year (not just indie) failed to win a single award or even to be nominated while Fez, a game which has already won an award, takes up nomination slots which could be given to other games. Similarly, the winner for technical excellence is literally a game made in the UDK; if being in 3d because you used a 3d toolkit is grounds for being the most technically innovative, I guess that's... wait.

Basically the judging process is very flawed and could use both more transparency and also more control to at least make it somewhat fair. I get that, for example, judges have preferences, but don't deny that you would give a hyped game more of a look than a game you've never heard of.

He said specifically he couldn't sleep because he couldn't stop thinking about what happened after the screening. Yes I agree, he didn't take it all that bad, but it's a shame he couldn't just laugh about it. I mean, the point I was making is that we can't really blame Phil for however the guy took it.

I believe the technical excellence is actually managing to code non-euclidean geometry with a pre-baked (and obviously euclidean) 3d engine
