the ghost in the shell tv series was terrible.
but the original movie owned
true true. I think I've watched the entire genre, so I'll only suggest the weirdest stuff that comes to mind. Dark Star, John Carpenter's first movie he made as a student is fantastic. He co-wrote it with Dan O'Bannon who went on to write Alien & Total Recall among others. also, did anyone see Gantz, movie or anime?

"Batteries Not Included" is quite possibly my favorite child-oriented Sci-Fi movie.
There have been many good recommendations, so here are some new ones:
I liked "Serial Experiments: Lain" when I was a teenager.
"Brainstorm" and "Altered States" were some of the less popular flicks I enjoyed as a child in the 80s.

Ulysses 31 is great(awesome spaceship designs) but you can't recomend it without mentioning cities of gold first. Ah yes - Mysterious cities of gold was epic! Also - Gatchaman/Battle of the planets was pretty cool (try to find the original one released a few years back on dvd, free from 7-zark-7 - it has a continuous storyline) to watch as a kid, some episodes were pretty dark. Not sure how well it holds up today.

actually, paprika and paranoia agent are also good sci-fi esque anime.
As much as I love those two, I dont think they belong to sci-fi.

Your sci-fi watchers and nobody, nobody's mentioned 'Bicentinial Man'? For shame you all are.
Hitch Hiker's Guide to The Galaxy. Space Quest Bicentinnial Man I, Robot Lost in Space Planet of The Apes (any) Stargate:The Movie The Matrix Trilogy Tron Iron Man 1 & 2 The Fifth Element 9 Eagle Eye? The Perfect Storm? 2012? Godzilla (1998) Super Mario Brothers The Movie? (it is sci-fi, don't tell me otherwise) Contact The Last Starfighter Indiana Jones 4? E.T. Short Circuit Wall-E Star Trek (2009) Star Dust? (2007)
Movies marked with ? hinge on the sci-fi genre but still have the sci-fi element to them. 'Star Dust' is an awesome mix of fantasy and a little science fiction.

haha yeah that list is pretty terrible.
the only good Matrix was the first one. The rest were cheesy action superhero flicks with bad dialogue.
I actually did enjoy Star Trek (2009) but then again I was never a big fan of Star Trek anyway so I didn't have any kind of expectations towards it.

Well, people have different taste and there are some good films in the list above, like Fifth Element, 9, Star Dust and Stargate (the movie). Then there were quite a bunch of ones that are terrible to me (I, Robot in particular made me what to scream and strangle the makers with their own intestines). Contact was OK I guess. But Space Quest? That's a games series by Sierra On-Line; did you mean Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen? That was a *really* horrible film! Even Lost in Space was better! :D
Oooooh! Old classics! Buck Rogers the 1950's series, would it be worth that nostalgia walk or would is simply be depressing?

The Perfect Storm? Isn't that a true story of a thing that happened in the 90s, aside from being a bad movie?
Er..

Space Quest? That's a games series by Sierra On-Line; did you mean Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen? Woops! Yes I did! Ah well. I guess my 80s-90s bias is showing. And, as far as I'm concerned, I thought this was a 'what would you reccommend I watch' thread. And, on that note: No one's reccommended 'Avatar' yet? Good. Granted, 'The Fifth Element' was kinda of cheesy. It just came to mind. And as far as superhero films go. Aren't they all part sci-fi? You trollin? See above.

I wasn't saying superhero movies aren't sometimes part sci-fi or whatever, just saying that they are mostly all bad.
