"@Hernan: I tried Game Maker. I don't so much hate it, as I had issues finding what I needed in the "visual programming" part of it, due to how it was labeled, and last I'd heard, the demo doesn't support using GML."

the demo does support GML; it supports about 95% of GML's functions (some are reserved for the pro version). most GM games that use the free version of GM use GML, avoid the visual programming stuff completely and you'll do fine

Ah, I had read somewhere that it didn't. I may give it a better shot, then. Might be a better way to introduce myself to programming games. Either that or start with smaller apps and/or Pong/Space Invaders. Tongue

Anyways, yeah, what I seem to be concluding is that: understanding of programming language != understanding of programming.

of course. an analogy is this: understanding how grammar works and being good at spelling doesn't mean you're a good novelist

Yeah, that's a good analogy.

Anyways, I think I'm going to rethink my approach and take the appropriate steps to get better at this.

Thanks again everyone.
