I have this 15.6" HP Notebook: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157822It was the highest-rated machine on Newegg for under $500... I've only had it for a couple months, and my only complaint is that the track pad really sucks, but other than that it's cool!

I have a 14" Asus laptop. I don't like the trackpad, so I use a little wireless mouse with it. It gets the job done when I'm on the road, but it's smaller than I'd like. I think the screen resolution is something like 1366x768, and that's just not enough space to comfortably run Visual Studio.

So it looks like most people like there smaller ones ok although a couple people prefer the larger ones. Good to know and I'm leaning towards small because of this but it looks like it's time to go to the store and try using VI on demo machines. Wow that does look pretty sweet, it's a good deal and the laptop looks pretty nice/fast.

I have a HP Envy 14.
Pretty happy with it, the size is fine, it's powerful and has a pretty good battery life and I managed to get it quite cheap too.
The only problem is relying on HP for driver updates, but you can get modded drivers pretty easily.

Isnt HP getting out of the pc business like ibm? (think pads arent ibm anymore) that might be why they are cheap (HP)

I've got a 13" acer laptop and I highly recommend it. It's lighter than a textbook too. Also, if you don't want your backpack to feel so heavy, try carrying your laptop in a laptop case instead.
I got that one too. An Aspire 3820TG, I3 with some crap gfx card. Bring it everywhere and do most of my programming and writing on it. For gaming and graphics and stuff I like a bigger screen though, so i might do something about that around the D3 release. So yeah, if you are somewhat mobile with your laptop go 13', there is a drop in performance when going down in size* but I can still play Civ5 without trouble on mine so. I had a 17' laptop earlier and i wouldnt recomend it, you basicly buy a stationary computer without the performance. *that´s what she said

I'd say just go to a Best Buy/Sony Style/Apple Store or something one day to get a feel of how the different laptop sizes work for you.

That would be excellent. "So let me just put this in my bag, and see.. uh, how it feels... Yeah, that's it."

I've got a 14" Dell studio. It's a bit on the heavy side, but there's nothing I can't use it for. In retrospect I could have gone for a better graphics card so that I could play my games on higher settings, but so far nothing has turned up unplayable.

13" HP pavilion laptop here. My suggestion is don't get an HP laptop, the cooling fan stopped cooling a week after the warranty expired, and then when I fixed that, a few months later the hard drive corrupted. Then one of the RAM slots decided to stop detecting working RAM sticks.
The other 2 HP laptops in my household have or are doing the same things. (1 has overheating issues, the other has been sent to HP multiple times because of hard drive corruption)

I have a 12.1" Asus 1215N-PU17 notebook. Got it on ebay with 4 GB of ram, a 300 GB HDD, and windows 7 64-bit. It has nvidia's ION2 in it and an Intel atom dual-core 1.8 ghz. I do everything on it. I love it. I love it so much. I love it. <3

I have a 15" HP Pavilion for 2 years and until now didn't fail me...except the battery and the adapter. It could be because someone cheat you. Or some mismanagement from yourself...maybe...

Dunno, but seems unlikely. Their HP ProBook series (the one in Phubans link, above) is currently the most common business laptop in this rather cold country.
