The annual virtual TIGsource formal ball will be taking place soon. You are all kindly invited to submit waltzes, what might be suitable for dancing to in the presence of and by delicate ladies and men of high standing. The deadline for submissions is Sunday the 27th of July, at midnight GMT.

I would so break the rules because I would read dance and not waltz. So it would be 4/4 house. Well, I would. I don't think I will create something tho!

Why the devil not? There's little easier than flinging together a basic waltz, neh? I love 3/4, so that means I'm in, right? You'd better be

I challenge you to make 3/4 house! I'll give this a go if I can find the time. And energy.

Sexist noise line I've heard in a long time! (Really; colour me impressed dude). The piano part, I take it, wasn't recorded via midi but rather programmed? (There's a really, to my ears, weird (but not at all unpleasant) rubato in it). I like the contrasting elements within the opening texture a lot. The main theme (the repeated pairs of notes) had already grown on me by the first repetition. The contrapuntal element is top notch. Sometimes it felt a little bit too treble-y, but that might be due to the fact that I'm listening to it on laptop speakers. That's cool enough. I like how the church bells are out of sync with the main rhythm. Is the organ line based on the same scale all the way through? I appreciate your use of the train/bells/birds sound effects within the music. They tempt me to use the word 'diegetic', but I think I'll hold of for now... This will give it a 6/8-in-2 kind of feel. But then it's not really 3/4 anymore! (historically, Waltzes weren't always in 3/4 anyway, though... (see wikipedia, for instance)). oh, and can I call dibs on the 8th challenge? Sure. Knock yourself out.

@increpare: Thanks for your very nice comments. The piano on that first one was recorded as audio straight out of my Triton LE. Since I'm a pianist, I rarely sequence keyboard parts. There definitely IS a strange rubato there though. The other two are rearrangements of classic christmas tunes, if they didn't strike you as familiar. RE: waltzes in 2. You're right, in a way. When sped up like that the tunes won't feel like waltzes, but there IS a historical precedent for doing waltzes ridiculously fast ... I just can't remember the composers who did it ... I want to say Strauss ... maybe? One of those guys wrote like a hundred waltzes that are meant to be danced at ridiculous speeds. Speeds so high that they have a 6/8-in-2 feel. My point is that a house dj could justify his piece that way ... not that it will necessarily be a 'proper waltz' in any way. I like this theme because it is nice and broad.

How's progress going y'all? I've started something basic that, so far, I'm not too happy with, but I'm going to see where it leads me.

Just for the hell of it, I sat down and messed about with my accordion this evening and came up with this, by no means serious attempt at writing a waltz: Waltz in GIt's a pretty poor recording unfortunately - I recorded it using one of those cheap MP3 recorder things and it kinda goes in and out a bit as it goes on. Also I made loads of mistakes Paul, listened to that EvanXMerz-Proposal-1.mp3 song, it's fecking excellent! Looking forward to hearing what you make for this thread!

Thank you very much for listening! I love the accordion. I wish I had one. I wish they weren't so darn expensive. I liked your recording. Although the recording itself wasn't perfect, the piece is very lively and fun!

Wow Terry that was an awesome song, I kind of like the quality of the recording. It reminded me of something you would hear coming out of an old radio. Tip of the hat to you!

Very charming Terry (Erm: I feel I should probably say something constructive. But I can't right now. Bedtime calls!)

My waltz is done.
I find it mildly painful/confusing to listen to as a waltz, but not unenjoyably so ... also: a definite candidate for creepy waltz title of the day methinks. (once again, not feeling particularly constructive).
