I never had so much fun stalking NPCs around the clock just to see all the different things they're doing at all hours of the day and night. Dragon Quest 8 is another one of my favorite RPGs, it and Radiata Stories are just oozing with charm.

Planescape: Torment - greatest vibe, world, characters and story ever. It's just not so popular as other RPGs. sexist guy speeks truth

Gothic 2 is definitely one of the best RPGs I've played. No trace of it in your poll, however.
Definitely Gothic 2, although as far as I know, it never really reached that far outside of europe. It's one of a kind. A lot of RPGs tried to dabble in trying to show a convincing city, Gothic 2 was the first to actually pull it off in my opinion. From gossiping people, NPCs reflecting on events that had just happened, a town crier was making constant announcements, there was already a shifting day and night circle, dynamically changing weather. None of which required input on the player-side, the city was living its own life and not just waiting for player input. There was a huge exploreable world, where every place you went, had a story to tell, and that's something even nowadays RPGs struggle with (or rather, especially modern RPGs since they're all about that copy pasta dungeon). If you look at it nowadays, it's just a lot of tricks and illusions they had used to make it seem alive. But when I played it for the first time, it seemed alive. And everyone I've been talking too, even people just recently starting the game, all said the same. I'd check it out, there's a lot to learn in this one.

I'm going to back whatever is said about Gothic 2 and 3 if it's a praise. I have just start playing them and they are what a lot of other game I tried to play only wish they would be.

Is Y's more hack'n'slash ? Its available for PSP, and I often thought I should get it, but I am unsure as to wheather its cool or not...whats great about it ?
The early Ys games have gameplay that's kinda dated, but the later Ys games are good action RPGs. I've also heard good things about the Legend of Heroes series, but only the first one has been localized. Let me add Xenoblade to the list, it's superb in many ways.
