I wasn't really interested in playing Chrono Trigger, but I found this mod/hack that makes it harder & I suppose no grinding (don't know if there is any in the original), its called Level Zero ( http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/111/). Has anyone tried it?

WRPGs: Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, Deus Ex if it counts for you JRPGs: Mother 3, all of the Mario ones except Partners in Time, Chrono Trigger (to a lesser degree than the others) I wasn't really interested in playing Chrono Trigger, but I found this mod/hack that makes it harder & I suppose no grinding (don't know if there is any in the original), its called Level Zero ( http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/111/). Has anyone tried it? Haven't tried it, but the original didn't have any mandatory grinding that I remember. It had potential for grinding, but all of the battles were preset and were triggered specific points on the overworld. The only problem there is that, like most other games in its genre, most of the regular battles were still basically filler (aka: "forced grinding") and could be won without much regards to strategy or positioning, which seems like something that might carry over to this hack regardless of removing the level system. Hack still seems like a great idea though and I'll try it sometime, always wanted to play/make something like that (JRPG without leveling/leveling only at preset points, although I'd also go one step further and make the only encounters boss encounters that are evenly spaced out from each other + implement a battle system that actually allows for meaningful strategy, probably just an SRPG style grid + make the game only ~4-5 hours long.)

Planescape Torment; voted for Fallout in the very abbreviated list on your site.

Has anyone tried it? I haven't heard of the hack but it is possible to play through the original game while not leveling your characters at all (so you complete the game with everyone at level 1). This is because equipment has a big effect on your stats and also because there is an item which turns xp into money, so after you get that you can still fight the mandatory fights.

At least Quina had a character arc in FF9. Amarant was basically filler.
FF9 (characters/world/music) SMT Series (just about everything) Fallout Series (clever design and no pulled punches) Mother Series (unashamedly itself) CT (but not Chrono Cross. It almost seemed like a fan game)
I quite liked Xenosaga but in all honesty it wasn't exactly good. It was slow-paced and clumsy but interesting.

Adding to Mother 3, I'd also like to mention The World Ends With You.

'Course it counts! Damn fun one, too. Kingdom Hearts 2... well, the gameplay was quite fun, but the story sank a bit. Also, "Swim This Way"... *shudder*

Old Timer here...
Ultima 7 part I and II. Many young'uns have never played them, download the exult engine, get a copy of U& and try it out. It still stands as an amazing example of world design.
I wholeheartedly agree! (Except that I recall the Forge of Virtue expansion to U7 never working right for me.)

Has anyone tried it? Yes. I did. And it makes the game so much better. Anyway the best RPGs are Persona 4, Vampire Bloodlines, and Gothic 2. So I don't know why we're even having this poll. Oh, and anything Jeff Vogel makes. Jeff Vogel is best.
