Chrono Trigger, Disgaea, FF6 + FF8
I get how a lot of people think FF7 is overrated, and while I personally love it, I would never put it on a best of RPG list. I agree with FF6, though. What puzzles me is you mentioning FF8. I've only just started it, but am bored because it's just spamming summons over and over. My PSP keeps dimming the screen due to watching summons for 75% of the gameplay. What's so great about FF8?

I didn't love FF8 either, but it's an okay game. It's better than anything square-enix is doing nowadays. But, yes, Final Fantasy 6 is probably the best J-RPG, like ever, next to chrono trigger. But no Star Ocean, Grandia, or Chrono Cross love? Theres just something about Star Ocean: The second story and grandia that makes me go back and play those games every year or so. The voice clips in battle in Star Ocean 2 are just simply amazing. They are so so so bad it's totally awesome. They are my favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHKCX_zFlH0 "okaaay!", "I did it!", "Ohh-GOOD!", "DRAG-GOn BREATH!" Tales of Symphonia on the gamecube isn't the very best, but it's also pretty good.

Early Ys gameplay is not outdated, it's fun even played today. It's a classic. That being said, the early consoles Ys versions graphics are outdated, but they are still fun. So I recommend getting Ys Complete I & II, which are newer versions of the older games. They are tons of fun, and there is nothing outdated in them.

Not the unskippable summons animations, that's for sure It's been awhile since I played it so I have to go by memory here, but I liked that it was epic in scope (OMG 4 DISCS!!! ENDS IN SPACE, EVERYTHING IS HUGE AND EPIC), I liked the 'power gaming' feeling when collecting all the random spells and goodies even though it made the characters kind of generically interchange-able in some ways (you could put 100 ultima on whatever stat to max it) but it still did a good job of making it feel like you made the characters stronger when they were doing their 9,999 x 20 limit breaks or whatever. I liked the level of polish and detail and how for a glimmering moment in games it seemed like extra production value could add to what made the games nifty and charming in the first place, hold it up and strengthen it, as opposed to detracting from it / replacing it as seemed to happen more and more as games gained better graphics but at the expense of fun/coolness. I thought it was alright that the characters weren't goofy kids, I put off playing FFX for many years because I didn't want to play as that whiny blonde soccer brat douchebag (voice acting - why you ruin games??). I thought the secrets you hunt down were worth hunting down, whatever that mega gf was at the bottom of the sea or the secret boss enemy with a million hit points, or just the random collectible GFs and cards and stuff they just did a good job of making it all seem worth it and cool. Yeah, so I like it but hey maybe you like another one better. If you like FF6 better you are probably right it kicks every kind of ass that a final fantasy game can kick. If you like FF7 I'm sure you and your sephiroth avatar are happy as can be. If you are a teenage nerd on the internet and you cut your teeth with FFX there isn't much that can be done about it, it does some things right and not all of the magic of FF games had been leeched out before that was made but it was probably the last game worth playing and it was barely worth playing. And did I mention I don't want to watch a whiny soccer kid whine?

i've played through all of the first one and 95% of the second one (the final boss is next to impossible and i haven't beat it yet) but it's pretty good -- but i'd say play the persona games first, since they are easier and more user-friendly. if you like the persona games you'd like the digital devil saga games too; they have a more serious (but also more open to interpretation) story than the persona games do, but are also harder and you'll die a lot more

FFX had the most interesting setting but underdeliver everything, good character that does not develop, good premise for shitty plot, interesting gameplay but smake and mirror, great cinematic for mundane moment, for all silly I found FF8 was it was sincerly and honestly believing in own hype and deliver some nice moment. Also cinematics was not stop and go, you played during cinematics, they prolong action, literaly, like when irving shoot at edea, you press the button the camera swirl into the air, edea dodge the camera swirl into the air another character in a car and it seemlessly transition to the control of that camera, it makes sense. Now it's all stop watch nonsense doing the action for you, go back to walking simulator RANDOM COMBAT start with FFX

yeah, i don't like the modern ff games as much as the early ones, but as far as the modern ones go ff8 might be the best (of the ff7-ff13 range); it felt like they were really "trying" with that game, even if it has stupid stuff that doesn't work (like the junction system, it was broken and awful). but it's not as much of a formula-follower as the others, and had more character development than most of the modern ff games
it's also probably the only final fantasy game that i can think of that does not have a "humor relief" character or a ridiculous character. i don't really like humor relief characters, they undermine a story by making it feel like a joke. like, what purpose does mog serve in ff6's story? or that guy with the huge tongue in ff9's story?

i can't play most jrpgs anymore because i can't see their stories (meaning plot, characters and dialog) as anything but gigantic piles of cliches. the only jrpgs i still enjoy are the shin megami tensei series because it deviates a bit from the norm and jrpgs like the new dragonquest games that don't focus on storytelling.
not counting srpgs.

As far as Digital Devil Saga is concerned, without their awesome plot and music, they would just be somewhat mediocre and difficult RPGs. In fact, I think that Devil Summoner 2 has the best battle system for an SMT game. But, they are definitely not lacking in the epic department. They aren't really post apocalyptic like Fallout, since you are mainly exploring a variety of dungeons rather than a 'wasteland' per se. it's also probably the only final fantasy game that i can think of that does not have a "humor relief" character or a ridiculous character. i don't really like humor relief characters, they undermine a story by making it feel like a joke. like, what purpose does mog serve in ff6's story? or that guy with the huge tongue in ff9's story?
Yeah, gag characters suck, there are other ways to add comic relief than adding a mascot character that puts a damper on any tension the rest of the game would have by bouncing around like a rabid chipmunk.
