Does it work?
Can (will) successful indie titles get you enough credit to hold a AAA industry job?
Enough credit to surpass not going to college?
Random thought, but doesn't really apply to me. Discuss.

if you've had the tenacity to develop and release a successful game all on your own i dont think anybody will give a damn if you went to college or not

why would you want to go AAA when AAA people try the fuck of them to get outta and go indie (or social or casual)?

I didn't really mean to move things in the direction of "WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GO AAA?"
It was more of just an idea. Do employers see independent work as something that is college-equivalent?
I'm not sure if we have any employers or AAA guys on the boards.
I understand your opinions though!

Some folks would prefer the stability and the percieved legitimacy of working for a large company. Others enjoy the freedom that indie development implies, and don't mind the lack of a monetary security blanket. Either way, declaring the superiority of one lifestyle over another isn't a value judgement I feel comfortable making.

what's more impressive: having released a game on your own (and all the experience that it implies) or having a piece of paper on your wall

But I also imply social and casual industry which is not indie and don't adhere the "bohemian artist" philosophy.
It's more about the pressure of crunch and fear of sudden lay off, it makes for bad QOL, stability and break people from working on games simply.
Also going indie then AAA will be an immense frustration because the use of creativity is polar opposite.

I like where this is going. And...I think that AAA dudes having no creative freedom and despising their jobs is a bit of an overstatement and isn't always the case. From what I've seen, the employees of companies like Valve, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac all enjoy their jobs, have job security, and have some form of creative freedom (in more of a team-based environment).

popcap started as indie
they were later bought by EA for a little over a billion dollars
that's one path from indie to AAA

Yeah, I always had the idea that you more or less HAVE to make a few games or be involved in some other kind of project to have the best chance of getting hired.
