It's because outise of gaming nobody care about memory optimization. I wonder how many industry shift to DOD from object?

Huh...I've heard of burn out and people getting fired after projects are completed, but never heard of a number like that. You have a source for it? I would definitely like to read more.

i'm surprised it's even that high. there's no end of kids from college who want to program games, so they just hire new ones and overwork them and fire them before they have to raise their salaries or give them higher positions. i had heard more like 2-3 years (one project)

So THAT'S why all the games suck.

Are pointers and memory management really that scary?

I guess, considering the alarming number of people that drop out of CS programs when they finally see the horror that is their future career.

to learn with who I consider masters in making games, although I don't know if I'll be able to learn Japanese.
If it's about design you would be surprise  Giggle Typical method is just brute force with the last "whim" being told to you it's the only way to do thing, that it was the idea all along (tit's not), and end up saying in interview the production was smooth and very organized to keep a straight face in front of money holder.

The great one are those who have great production process, I would advise you to deepen production management ie " how to get the sit done"
If it's "brute force" and the "only way to do thing" why the design of these three games I mentioned (and a lot of the games of these companies) is so polished? They must know their shit.

Polish in what? It's easy to polish existing formula, graphics, engine and story is known entity. But they don't go that much beyond formula if you look closely. Portal was a mini game compare to most AAA games was the one with a "new formula", and they fit it to puzzle structure.

Valve as the best process though.

But game design is the most chaotic field right now, you have no definitive nor truly metric of performance except sales.

Also except valve i avoid most company and game you cite, so it's also a bit of preference, but I fnd their gameplay poor, especially control (then here people crucify me for not enjoying their game).

So yeah you might learn something, but I don't think there will be ground breaking revelation on game design, They all excel in production though.

The doorway looks like a mouth, the boobs look like "angry" comic book eyes and the gun looks like a monobrow.  Well, hello there!

No one in the game industry will give a crap about your college degree unless you have nothing else to show!

Sig'ing this because it's fucking incredible. I couldn't agree more.

I never deny there isn't good game. But since there is so many of them that do the same thing, why bother one more of the same? It's not even like the story, setting and etc are mindbogglingly different, I mean even basic difference is not there. Unchartred work because tomb raider was the only one doing "tomb and civilization" and suck at it, uncharted fit the niche and is left unchallenged to the point it became hard to just reach their level of polish.

I thought the same thing except the gun monobrow, as if it were some kind of insect creature waiting for an unsuspecting youth to run into its mouth so it could consume its dreams and lifeforce.
