My masterpiece is an ambiguous pair of breasts? I can live with that.

I think that Half-Life 2 is a bad shooter.  Ninja
it's a traditional shooter where there's no Iron Sight and Auto Health RegenLips Sealed

Thought this may be of interest. Plus, it kind of fits into the realm of starting an indie company and then growing into a larger one (Naughty Dog's Andy Gavin).

Five-part blog post (rather lengthy) about becoming a game programmer.

Although not completely, since it does have Physics Puzzles and Four Second Sprint.

HL2 really impressed me when it came out. It felt like The Future(tm) at the time and was the last game that did that for me.

I think it hasn't aged very well though. The game's kinda bland in a lot of respects (weapons!) and a lot of the physics stuff seems superficial and gimmicky in an age where physics engines have become a standard in 3D games.

Ah, the dream of an indie developer: To be a mainstream developer dreaming of being indie.

Because it's "traditional" doesn't mean is good. Lots of new FPS are good, but of course there's also bad ones.
If by traditional you mean "DOOM" or "Quake", then I may somehow have skipped the parts of talks you can simply ignore by walking away, half-assed physics puzzles, and bland level design. I just could finish the first episode of the game before I just didn't care of the game anymore. (it was a bit after the part where you need to elevate the water to pass)

I never deny there isn't good game. But since there is so many of them that do the same thing, why bother one more of the same? It's not even like the story, setting and etc are mindbogglingly different, I mean even basic difference is not there. Unchartred work because tomb raider was the only one doing "tomb and civilization" and suck at it, uncharted fit the niche and is left unchallenged to the point it became hard to just reach their level of polish.
We play more of the same because, unless the level design is just a bit different otherwise it would be boring, it still can be fun. I speak for myself of course, but playing the NES mega man titles is still fun since they got a lot of new power ups and settings, even if the mechanics remained the same.
The thrill of having a new adventure over-shades the use of old mechanics, and it can even improve on them. But I think new mechanics are as important that old mechanics. (without new mechanics video-games wouldn't have existed in the first place!).
