bro, characters in gothic (except arcania but let's just forget about that) are anything BUT wooden. it always weirds me out when people say gothic is a generic fantasy gam. gimmy said the same in another thread. i guess it must be the english translations ruining the series' unique charm.

@jakman: there's a lot of deadpan humor in the original german version. im not familiar with the english version but im suspecting the translators didn't pick up on that.

I do like German, actually. I prefer germanic languages to romantic ones on the whole, though the only other one I know is French. Unless I see myself going abroad in the future I don't expect to learn jack.

I suppose what's not wooden in germany can appear wooden to other cultures

I think Monster Hunter has ruined me.  I was completely flaccid fighting my first dragon.

I'm really finicky about character dialogue in RPGs so I think the English translations of both Skyrim and Gothic have tediously generic writing. However, Gothic does feel like a more cohesive world, while Skyrim feels like a more entertaining one (Sheogorath is one of the best written characters in an RPG).

But yeah, why is this a condescending fanboy wank. They are both good games. Calm down y'all.

I did pick up the english version back then (TM) and the voiceovers were pretty good. Concerning the generic fantasy game thing, isn't it just a matter of "low magic scenario" versus "high magic scenario"?
For example, to me a high magic scenario is about as bland and generic as it gets, while I enjoy the subtle nuances of a low magic scenario. Your mileage may vary of course.

/edit:
In further news, Skyrim versus <game here> seems to be the thing of the hour. I guess its only natural after the praise it received. The comment thread over on RPS about The complete fool in Morrowind was rather delightful (in a trainwreck kind of meaning) and somewhat mirrors the discussion here.
If you've got the time and can manage stupid (hey you're reading my posts after all Wink ), it's insightful and a harbinger of things to come.

I hope you guys don't end up like this victim here. His bottle is filled with too much Skyrim, as you can see. The last 3 minutes pretty much sum it up.

anyways I saw the Dawnguard preview on kotaku, it looks great. I guess it'll come to pc/ps3 after a month of being on xbox? stupid.

It is going to be interesting to see where the mod scene takes Skyrim in the next few years. Playing around with the different mods is more fun than the game itself, and some of the visual alterations that have been achieved already with mesh tweaks, new water shaders, and ENB series configurations are awesome (though let us just pretend that the weird/creepy adult themed mods don't exist).
