One international group for digital gifts and national groups for people wanting to send material gifts would be nice. Also the option to commit to both would be cool.

I'm okay to do this, but money is always tough. It might be possible, but it's hard to tell at the moment.

I'm just learning pixel art now (not that good yet), but I'm satisfied with my writing abilities.

I would be willing to write a story or poem for somebody. Does that sound too "cheap" or like cheating or something?

I think I'd be very satisfied with a story written special for me. That'd be a beautiful gift.

We could always do a communal pool, too -- everyone can pitch in money, which then gets split evenly to work with. There could be a small minimum (say, 5 dollars), but the option to over-donate (for instance, I could donate 20 dollars), and then when it gets re-divided, everyone is better off!

It'd work as long as everyone was committed and some people were gracious enough to overdonate. I'd say 10 to 15 dollars is a nice minimum to work with, given some overdonation.

I'd be down for communism if i had more than five dollars.

My only offer is something made. But just knowing that all y'all might go ahead might happen is giving me happy tingles and filling me with good cheer. so there's that.

Yeah, that's the only issue with it. Especially since, as a community of artists and talented people, 'what I made' is even more meaningful than usual.

I think it'd be nice for the people who AREN'T amazing artists and the like, though, to have the option of the communal pool. And hey, it'd lower the numbers of people in there...

Idea! Perhaps, you can opt-out of the pool, for whatever reasons you want - either through a determination to make your own gift, or to willingly up the amount each person in the pool gets, or something else.

I organized the last one. I could do it again.

Edit: Also I agree with less buying, more making. I'll try and find a webapp or something that automates the pairing up.

I'm cool with the idea of a pool, but I guess if the point is to make sure everyone can buy something regardless of whether they have money, a minimum wouldn't make much sense. Money can be tight, and there are plenty of cool things that can be got for not a whole lot (e.g. stuff at gog.com). But I also like the idea of stuff that's created. Maybe with a pool, everyone has to buy something *and* create something?

Also I was toying with the idea of doing a Secret Santa Secret Compo, where people with dissimilar skillsets are paired up but you don't know who you're working with until Christmas, with the goal of creating a small game for release on Christmas day.

The minimum was just thrown off the top of my head. I was more meaning to discourage people entering the pool just to yoink the money from other donators. You're right though - 5 dollars is a lot for some people.

I like this idea, except I wouldn't plan it exactly on christmas day. People have other obligations then. Maybe a few days after?

I agree with Fission Mailed on this one.

Great idea, but don't do it on Christmas. I *always* go to my grandmother's house for ALL-DAY on Christmas and wouldn't want to have work hanging over my head.

Plus a lot of people travel and would miss out.

It's not ON Christmas. It's by Christmas. It would be released on Christmas, as a gift to the world.

Good point. Even still, many people are busy on the days leading up to Christmas. When people travel, they usually leave on, at the latest, the 22nd or 23rd. I think it might be better to do it all after Christmas.

But, that said, I am okay with doing it your way. I just want to warn you that others may object.
