Here is a concept of my lil metroidvania project.
Actually I am a bit ahead of this, but I'll keep it for a history.

Oh, no, no-no-no and NO again! No No NO
But anyway, this is your game... If I may, I would suggest you not to use tiles. At all. Use them as mathematical model for level and whole game, but instead of drawing tiles draw big bits like on concept, with additional "rubbish" lines an stuff like that - make your game a bit more "special", please-please-please! Beg Beg Beg

Trying more crude NES-looking style.

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely try it. I just don't want to waste to much time on graphics at the beginning - have to decide on the overall tone, graphic style and level design first.

Health bar seems like it's a placeholder - out of style..
Save point is nice)

Any ToDo list?)
Water's nice, especially where it overlays foreground - seems a bit mysterious

Water and laser pistol

I really like this. For some reason, I'm enamored by the cave tiles.  Coffee

Ruins level mockup. It is unclear what the background tiles would look like.

I like new style. It's better in every single way imo.
And I'm still agains tiles :D With such artist skills you could make MUCH more unique world, even using copy-paste to speed up parts drawing...
Oh, I'm sorry, I shouldn't tell this... Forgive me.

Working on "Ruins" level. Lots of spikes, arrow shooting traps, etc.

Tileset is pain in the ass. It undergone several iterations and started to look sorta ok.

Also new jelly cube sprites.

Various blocks and powerups

The block with eye is called "Evil Eye Mob". It shoots a series of red plasma balls to player. When it dies, it falls down as an ordinary movable block. So it's a mob and a physical puzzle object at the same time Smiley
Dragon-looking block is arrow shooter trap. I personally love to make a series of narrow platforms in front of it.
