Hi all. I think it's time to show you what's I've been doing the last 9 months. On my way back home I started thinking why I had so much troubles making & finishing a game. Two things came to my mind: cost of error and teamwork effort. So, to alleviate those two sources of error, I started working alone on a procedural engine and game. Some technics explanations can be found on my french blog ( http://blogs.wefrag.com/skaven ). I can explain things in english if someone really wants me to. You can catch me on Twitter : http://twitter.com/#!/@skaven_I use SFML, Bullet Physics and Raknet. .Exe is tight to 2Mb (700Ko Krunched). Around 250Ko of .OGG audio samples. No Textures (I lie a bit ). There is a Linux and MacOSX version. I expect it to be released in 9 months. In september 2011 it looked like this : Now it's more like that (older screens to newer ones ) : Thanks for watching

i really enjoy farting on the achievements of others, but a procedurally generated wipeout is actually really fucking cool

I've been seeing screens for this on #ScreenshotSaturday for a while, and it looks beautiful. I wish the ship designs were more original though, or at the least taking inspiration from Wipeout and putting your own spin on it.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, the ships are greatly inspired by WipeOut. Actually, I have ships parts (nose, engine, cockpit, wings) that I assemble. So, I may end with more variations than WO but the look will stay the same.

This looks unbelievably good, I love the clean style and the size of the distribution is impressive. Bonus points for procedural generation, Linux support and Wipeout aesthetics.

So, I may end with more variations than WO but the look will stay the same. Will there be procedurally generated opponent ships? Because after a while, knowing exactly how opponents will behave (this guy's aggressive, this one's super-heavy, the flashing orange one will explode if I ram it, etc) decreases replayability. If it always feels like you're up against a new batch of racers with a wide variety of attribute combinations, it'll always feel like a new race.

Looks great, though the ice and snow on top of it is too shiny IMO.

No video yet, I have to clean things up before. Maybe a video without gameplay before the end of year. Everything is burnt, too shiny, bloomy,... Specular is too much strong also. I have to fight with my habit of over-using effects/shaders. AI will be tweaked to be a relevant challenge in solo. Not much. The game will be too much fast to see if an opponent is more aggressive than another. LAN/Internet expected too. Here are some over burned screens about solo progression:

Looks pretty sweet. I know you're going for a minimalistic look, but I would love to see more textures or at least some more detailed objects to break things up a little in some places. This doesn't need to be everywhere mind you. Only where it makes sense. [/artist's gripe]

Wow, I am very excited to see this again when its coming to completion. F-Zero is easily one of my favourite games of all time, and this looks like it could be a LOT of fun to smash around in with friends.
Looking forward to the video!
