The issue comes down to whether you want a triangular mesh or a square mesh.

Try to find out what your renderer uses to render the sphere (square or triangular - just drop the amount of polys to render it).

Navigating the mesh is simple (navigating any graph is simple). But yeah, creating a sphere graph is going to be tough - but solving that problem is going to open up a world of gameplay.

If you have a sphere mesh, which you do, you can create a graph from it without killing yourself...
