I somehow ended up dodging the majority of consoles after the SNES. I've played a bit of PS1/PS2 at a friends place and perhaps some small amounts of N64. Afterwards, it was all about the PC for me.
By now I'd be willing to dive back into the console market, if not for a wider choice of game options and some really great exclusive titles. But somehow, I can't get myself to buy something that is so far along its life expectancy. I'll buy into the next generation I guess. Oh but I do have a DS. My love for sprite based 2D games made me buy it.

Among the consoles, if we're going as far back as a decade ago the PS2 is probably the best overall. The sheer massive library of great games allowed it to dominate. Current-gen is kind of trivial what with most games having multi-console availability, though I'm partial to the 360 (partly because it was always cheaper, and I don't care about online play). There's nothing wrong with the Nintendo consoles, but they always release a minority of quality 1st party games with the same staple mascots (which I do enjoy, namely Metroid, Zelda, DKC), and have shit 3rd party relative to the other consoles. As much as I hated the Wii-mote gimmick, it could have supported many more quality games. Based on number of sales though, the Wii kicked everyone's ass in current-gen so I couldn't say they made a bad move.

I like PC for indie games, old games, cheap emulation. I'm always below spec for modern games; don't care so much because I'm more interested in console exclusives than pc-exclusives. Not an FPS, RTS or MMORPG player so there's no justification for me to spend the dough.

it has fun games with no real age target
it appeals to people younger than 13, which the other consoles mostly ignored
it's gimmicky, but it was gimmicky first, so now that the other companies are trying to catch up with the gimmicks it's already moved on back to normal game

Yeah, so the best platforms are the ones which have the highest amount of great games on it =P

For me, it'd probably be PC and PS2. If emulation counts then there's absolutely no contest in the PC's case either.

my progression was, including ones I played with any regularity (only owned the ones with an asterisk)

NES > GB* > N64* > GBA* > PS1 > GCN* > PS1* > DS* > PS2 > PC* > PS2* > WII > PS3

I've probably put the most time into N64 and GB over time, but PC has rapidly outstripped them

I missed SNES entirely, so oddly enough my first PC gaming experiences were emulating SNES because our computer was too junky to run anything demanding
I did play tons and tons of it but I don't think it really qualifies

Was late to the sony in all cases (got my ps1 for free from a friend who got a ps2, etc) so i actually avoided the massive piles of crap and only played decent games

Also, off-topic: I recently played some GC games and I seriously couldn't understand what was supposed to be good about Wind Waker.

Structure is very broken, "some" dungeon are good (not a lot), good ideas overall, great graphics at the time, cool side quest, if you don't mind the emptyness between nice overworld stuff, plenty secret, the trial cave, FUCKING AWESOME GANON MOMENT, the ending is nice (not battle), expressivity of link and character, great music.

Yeah nothing really mesh together, it's a bad zelda, average game but lot of cool stuff nontheless.

Zelda cease to be great after majora, and that game had a lot of forewarning about the decay of the series. But compared to other game, zelda is still a top tier game. But other game are closing the deal pretty fast and I don't think with the current streak zelda will remain a reference at all. It's already just another series between many other modern game. If skyrim successor have great combat, zelda will became mostly irrelevant, outdated and fanservice.

About Wii: I'm not going to say it's the best console this gen, but it's definitely my favorite. First, it has plenty of awesome 1st party games which are the main reason why anyone should buy a Nintendo home console. Kirby, Wario, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem - almost every big franchise got good-to-awesome new entries. Also, some franchises that were pretty much dead, like the Excite-racers, Battalion Wars, Sin & Punishment or Punch Out.

And then, the actually good 3rd party games that can't be found anywhere else: Opoona, Little King's Story, Muramasa, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, A Boy and His Blob, Xenoblade, Monster Hunter Tri, No More Heroes, Zack & Wiki, Blast Works, Klonoa, Shiren the Wanderer, Chocobo's Dungeon, etc.

And while the Virtual Console and WiiWare services could be much better, it got a nice collection of games during the years that are definitely worth playing. Not to mention it's very hack-able, so it's great for retro emulation. Emulating SNES with the Classic Controller feels so right.

It's overall more arcade-ish and retro than the HD twins, and I love that. So yeah, Wii and PS3 was the way to go for me this generation, but DS still beats both of them

Gamecube had potential but not much worth getting was ever release for it, i mean, your list pretty well sums up everything worth buying for gamecube (aside from, IMHO, Twilight Princess which is MUCH better than wind waker, I didn't like wind waker at all, all the sailing bored me to tears and there weren't enough dungeons/quests, and metal gear solid: twin snakes, which is just MGS1 using the MGS2 engine ). Also Ocarina of time: master quest...i mean, the disk was really just 2 N64 roms on a gamecube CD, (one of them basicly being a romhack), so I don't know if i'd really count that

Eternal Darkness was wicked though, one of my favoite games on the system :D

Hard choice though, I own all the consoles (but wii and 360, wii has no games that interest me and though 360 does have a few (All of cave's newer shooters have 360 versions) I just can't bring myself to buy one for them, they're super expensive to import now anyways :/

I'd say going by sheer number of "Amazing" games PC wins hands down, followed by PS2, PS2 has an AMAZING library of games for it, and it's still a popular enough system that games are still made for it! (mostly JRPG's...but I love my JRPG's so that's fine with me)

I voted for PS2 and PC, because those are the only two platforms I played on in the past 2 generations. Before that I was strictly a Nintendo kid, up until the N64 (I fell out with the Game Cube)... But why not included DS on the list? I have just as many if not more DS than PS2 games on my shelf. I also bought a Wii a year ago but haven't really had too many great experiences with it yet.

I feel that the Wii is more of a thing you play with friends, like the N64 was, but then again I'm not in highschool anymore, so... PC it is! I've really turned into a "hardcore" PC gamer in the past 2 years starting with Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 and now my Steam library features over 40 games.
