Its been a little while since i updated this devlog. Im still working away at this game and im really enjoying it! I am finally happy with what i am aiming for and so far it is testing well.

Here is a little glimpse of a new area that is now fully designed and implemented. Its a cave area which is found under the ground of the first area.



Basically every zone has underground zones which are much much harder than the outside world however underground is where the good upgrades and stuff is hidden.

Do the two boxes at the top represent the mouse buttons? If so, do you really need the 'left, right' labels? If not so, please ignore me.

Im glad you have said this as i hated it myself, god only knows why i put it in.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I feel like the end is in sight now (a long way away but still) Ill put a video up soon

Also im thinking about keeping the story to a minimum kinda like super metroid. Give the basics and have the adventure be the story. any thoughts?

Another very productive day so far. I have designed a new enemy for the game, A Cave spider. He jumps about all over the place and when its not jumping it can fire a bullet at the player.
I have also been designing lots of new terrain items for the maps and have made a few more world screens and cave screens.
The game is coming along very nicely and it is HARD! which is a good thing imo. I can tone the difficulty down however i will see how it tests and get some feedback.

Remember Super Metroid's story was a bit deeper because the planet gave you a sense of history in spite of not being direct about it. (Aquaria did something similar though it was a bit more direct about it.) I think this implied history made all the difference in the world in Super Metroid as far as story goes.

ok i see what you mean, what i will do is have little bits of story but to be honest, the game is about the action so any story line will be pointless anyways and will only detract from the mayhem!

I agree. In my opinion, for this game, it would be like if they tried to add a story-line to the original Doom.

[edit] Oh and it looks like great fun so far. I can't wait to play it!

I have now added the first boss you come across in the game, its at the end of the cave and it is protecting the "Drive on water" Mod for the Sweezy Gunner ship.....

Here he is, In game his fat body bobs up and down as he moves around.



He has 4 attack moves.

1 - He moves toward the player and his speed increases with every hit.

Next moves he stops for
2 - He spawns a normal enemy spider (they jump around and annoy) from every hole...(tehehe)
3 - He shoots a jet of bullets in the direction of the player
4 - lots of tiny little spider bugs crawl from the holes in all directions,

This boss is fairly difficult but not too much so as he is the first. I hope you like

Yes and no, what i do is have a varible that holds which pattern to go into, this number is randomly generated (1-4) if the boss is not doing any attack, however there is also a period of no attack in between patterns that gives the player a better chance of winning.

I have been working away on the Pause menu screen, here it will show you where you are on a map, give all your collected power ups/mods and heart containers.

It will also display all the guns you have found and what your current and max ammo is. max ammo upgrades can be found or bought throught the world.

Also you can switch from the map to a Beast log which will show you all the mobs you have killed, how many and some other stuff. Also there is a Lore section, in the game there are lots of hidden floating bill boards out in space, if you find them and destory them they appear in the LORE section and give some crazy information about the world of Sweezy Gunner and some insight into my development ie concept work etc.

Anyways here it is, let me know what you think! :D

That is a lot of stuff.  I don't even know what those icons are at the bottom, and they're teeny.  I'd consider simplifying it quite a bit ..

lol, i was aiming for lots of stuff, The things across the bottom are basic upgrades like +5 to bombs etc. I dont think its hard to see what is going on, everything is fairly large and labeled, plus in game if you mouse over anything it tells you what it is. Plus the screen shot is scaled down for upload, not full size

You dont really have to do anything on this screen, no drag and drop, it is all information and things you have collected.
