I really want a reasonable remake of FF7 with improved fidelity and THAT IS ALL.

No rewrites, no Advent Children or Crisis Core shit, none of that nonsense. Retain the original translation, retain all the writing, add nothing but a new coat of paint.

While FF7 has definitely not aged well in the visuals department, I still highly enjoy it every few years when I replay it. The battle system is fun (and makes more sense now, as an adult; materia choices do matter!), the story is a lot more nuanced and heartfelt than the sequels/expanded canon give you reason to believe, and it is overall a very fine game. I would honestly rate it as the best Final Fantasy, not because it has the best first playthrough (that would be 6) but because it offers the most return value. To me, anyway.

I agree with all of this. Unfortunately, the official announcement from Squeenix was that FF7 was too large in scope to ever be feasibly remade :/

Literally admitting that the scope of latter game was only a fraction of this one.

They could literally just rerender all the scenes and maybe do some new models for the characters

and they would make infinity money

FFXIII-2 sold 5xx XXX, less that tales of zillia, player had complain about nonsensical complex map that hinder navigation, way to over react.

To contrast both FFX and FFX2 sold in the million at the same time.

FF is dead

Good riddance.
The later games were one big plea to their fans to stop buying those "games", so they can get on with whatever they'd rather be doing.

IMO, 2d games tend to age better than 3D, ALA Donkey Kong, Zelda I, II, ALTTP, Final Fantasy III, Pac Man, etc.  The early 3D games look especially bad.

Mechanically I think both kinds age equally well, but this is definitely true aesthetically. I think it's due to stylization, which is a quality that's always inherent in 2D games due to them being, well, 2D. Most likely, heavily stylized games like Wind Waker or Okami won't age nearly as badly as stuff like Deus Ex or Tomb Raider have. And of course, people will still love the shit out of Metal Slug's visuals a hundred years from now (if the game isn't being directly upscaled to 160000x90000 by then...)

That being said, I kind of like the really-early-3D aesthetic. Stuff like Wolf3D, Doom, etc. Shit only gets bad during the jump from sprites to polygons.
That's not entirely true. Atari 2600 masterpieces aren't very visually stunning either, it wasn't until the NES/Genesis/SNES era when pixels reached a perfected "art form," and there were plenty of bad-2D-graphics games before that. Even some of the games for those systems turned into crap.

EDIT: WOW. Superninja'd.

I think Quake 1 still looks pretty good. Much better than Quake 2 or 4, imo.

And I forgot the trainwreck that was ff14, there isn't good cinematic rpg these day (since all game are cinematic and does it better), even uncharted get more attention now in japan.

Now skyrim had rise as the next RPG heaven even in japan ... That's a trend I like better >: )

Interesting thread. I think this happens to some of the best games, really, when they aren't designed for replay value, no matter the age. I can't play any of the Metroid games again after beating them, or Zelda, without feeling like I'm wasting my time or getting bored but I dig most of them. New-school Mario is too easy and forgettable to have any replay value either.

Bad visuals don't bother me much. The way I see it, if the didn't seem so shitty in the past they can't be that distracting now. I remember thinking Mario 64 looked like crap when it was first released because I wanted what was on the N64 box art. Still feels like a great game, but replay value is diminished now after kicking its ass for so many years.

Quote
I actually enjoyed much more FF9 over FF7.

I agree, FF9 is possibly the most underrated FF game, certainly the best-looking one of that generation and consequently STILL the best looking one ever because I much prefer the fixed-camera/pre-rendered background look to the full-3d introduced with FFX; it's sleaker/cleaner, and better for cinematic purposes. The latest installments have sharper hd graphics but don't look "better" to me. As for gameplay, I found it flawed like most jrpgs, however I liked that in sticking with ATB system they just milked it for all its worth and beefed it up. It's always doomed to be a button-masher, but it can be a bit more fun with 4 characters, fast casting (fuck I hated the GF system in FF8). I liked the weapon system as well.

FF7 aged horribly. Again, not due to visuals or mood for my tastes, but the pace and content after having played it years before just leaves me cold now. I'd have to catapult to some specific stages of the game that I thought were coolest.

most jrpgs have "aged" horribly for me because now that i'm a cynical adult i can't parse the stories of most of them as anything but collections of cliches. but i'm ok with that. it'd be weird if i still enjoyed all the same things i enjoyed at age 12 for the same reasons.

I would say the middle part is the most interesting, the intro is boring, the ending is boring, and the middle have nugget of boring, everything else is topnotch but you don't want to come back THROUGH THE F...... BORING PART again. Also PHI stopping intervention.

Just let zelda die and let the new team do is own stuff.
