To me this sounds like you volunteering someone else to do a lot of work.

I practice what I preach.

Maybe large companies can handle this because they can assign people specifically to writing and testing code for old hardware. Indie developers don't have that luxury - my time is precious and every minute I spend on old hardware (assembling, writing, testing) is a minute I don't spend on making a fun game.

You don't have to even touch old hardware. All you need to do is write cross-platform, sustainable, adaptable code. Games need to be fun, sure, but they also need to work. You're ignoring people who don't meet your narrow criteria for computing, and setting your games to fail in the future. (just think of what a pain it is to get old games working that have fixed resolutions or other arcane practices)

As far as I'm aware 16:10 (as in 1920x1200) is much more common as the native resolution for computer monitors, while 16:9 (1920x1080) is the standard for other displays like TVs and movie projectors. I don't expect those two fields to agree on the one true aspect ratio any time soon.
I've heard this multiple times, and would like to point you to the Steam hardware survey. Notice that 1920x1080 (16:9) is by far the most common resolution among Steam users. Whether that maps to being more popular among everyone is another matter, but 16:9 is undeniable everywhere and if you're providing a wallpaper, it'd be silly not to provide a 16:9 version.

(I am admittedly a tiny bit biased on the issue as I just got a new 16:9 monitor.)

If you add up the resolutions, it looks like an even split between 16:10 and 16:9. The total share of 16:10 resolutions is 38.34% and that of 16:9 is 38.86%, which stresses the importance of making our PC based game interfaces work with multiple aspect ratios.

Bonus points if your interface layout doesn't break if the user wants to play in a 2000x800 window.
