The game is really looking awesome. I'm glad it's leaning towards a more action packed style of game play as opposed to the normal point and click auto attacking. I'm not sure how I feel about the assassin being called a thief, though. I mean a sneaky dagger wielding character doesn't necessarily have to be someone that steals things... They could be a morally good assassin or whatever. I just think it's a bit limiting like switching the warrior's name to swordsman.
Engineer looks pretty neat, I like the whole high technology feel to the charr race. What are your guys opinions on Guild Wars 2? Why are you getting it? Why are you NOT getting it?

Been following this game for a while, and it is looking very good. I loved the original Guild Wars games, they're among the first PC games I've ever owned. The new combat system and the whole event system look very good and should make it much more fun than many other MMOs. I'm getting it for a few reasons: - I've wanted a good MMO without a subscription fee, so this is perfect
- The originals were pretty good, and from what I've seen this will be even better
- My friend also wants to get it so I'll want to get it as well
Also yes the Engineer looks like a particularly fun profession, though their lack of any melee weapons is rather disappointing.

WAIT... No subscription fees?! That is way too good to be true. Whoah. Wait, what, really? Everything I read just now seems to say it's true... But can it really be? This is just too good to be true.

Yeah, that's how the first games worked too. You pay an initial fee like any other game ($50/60), and its free forever. They support it through microtransactions, but they're entirely non-game changing things like more dye colors, more character slots, and purely visual and useless 'pets', etc.

The only question is how much of a WoW clone it will be I mean all high fantasy MMOs basically have to borrow heavily from WoW or else that core group will never switch over I'M CYNICAL

It's not like WoW in the slightest. If anything it's like Phantasy Star Online with typical MMO "automatic" combat, a Monster Hunter-style crafting system and arena-based PVP.

I used to be very into Guild Wars back when it was fresh. Way too much actually, and it ended with me swearing never to play an MMO again . I ran a PvP guild with some degree of success. It's a very good game. Completely different from WoW-likes. The PvE content was more like a normal RPG campaign with story missions and side quests, only played with other people. It was one of few MMO games you could actually "finish". PvP was purely skill-based and a bit like if you mixed Counterstrike with Magic the Gathering. There was also no real leveling or grinding in the game (you could attain max level in a day, or create an already maxed-out character for the PvP), maxed gear was available in common shops, and anything you'd have to grind for was merely cosmetic. You could also always change your stats and abilities to produce a new build. There were thousands of skills to chose from, with some nice combos and strategies possible, but you could only have 8 on you at one moment. A very similar experience to MtG deck building. Also - fantastic art direction. Guild Wars 2 looks more classic MMO-ish in a way, with high max level cap and gear grinding, and they also removed the "deck building" in lieu of a simpler system of abilities being tied to your weapon. I understand the goal is to prevent people from running completely sucking setups (there was some difficulty curve there), but I can't shake the feeling it kills one of the game's main joys. Still, I have much trust in Arena Net's designers, and this is certainly an MMO to check out. And yeah, it's free to play without hooks.

Well between your post and Derek, I found myself eating my words. The game certainly sounds promising, but that doesn't mean all too much. I'll remain optimistic and wait for the true vidjagame connoisseurs here on this site to give a critical opinion once the game's out.

This game looks like everything I want from an MMO. It's like, fulfilling. I really hope it'll deliver, but so far it looks like that's going to be the case.
So I'm definitely getting this.

But Guild Wars 2 is not like that, sadly. From what I saw and played at PAX last year, it was just World of Warcraft again, with Tiger's Longsword of Stamina and everything. Well, it didn't have any PvP at the demo (I think), but from what I hear they're moving towards "Realm vs Realm" stuff where certain areas in the world become PvP locations, like World PvP in WoW. And I guess quests are more like Warhammer: Age of Reckoning in that events will happen sometimes, and if you're in the area you can participate. Basically, what I played of it was just World of Warcraft with Charr instead of Orcs, which upset me greatly.
