This is how it looks with the snow trail turned on and off:


The snow effect is done with a particle system. The particles can collide with the terrain heightmap and that makes it harder to tell what are fully simulated entities and what is just a mesh particle. Trees and some other objects also emit bunch of snow particles around them to integrate them better to the scene.
