'tis done!  Bootleg Bash, a NES-style demake of Smash Bros is now
available (with horrible messy C++ source).  Right now I only have the
Windows executable in the zip file, but will hopefully have the Linux and
Mac ones included.

Features
  • Four-player (single-computer) competitive gameplay
  • Support for four gamepads
  • Eight semi-familiar characters
  • Six maps
  • Delicious food
  • Poop
  • Mario-Paint composed soundtrack!
  • Sexy sound effects generated with SFXR
  • Blood!
  • Brief rear nudity! (in the manual!)
  • NES-style manual included (Manual.pdf) - will be updated
  • Completely mod-able! (aka, I was too lazy to put all the sounds/graphics files in a data file, plus, Open Source!)
  • Horrible messy code

> Jazz Jackrabbit? -> Spaz Whackrabbit

Spaz is the name of the second playable character in Jazz Jackrabbit 2. So no.

HipHops were those little birdies that help you out in Jazz Jackrabbit. So, nuh-uh.

Also, dig the sprites. They look like those "almost-there" imitation characters adorning el-cheapo pencil cases and food products around the world. Just excaping copyright violation.

You mentioned NES-esque sounds?

For retro or prototype sound effects I use sfxr by DrPetter which is an automatic sound effect generator.

Heh, I think you should simulate a sprite limit and have all the sprites composed of 8x8 tiles. A lot of bootleg games tend to blatantly ignore this limit, so I think it'd add a pretty nice touch.

I can't tell if the lizard thing is supposed to be Yoshi or Bowser. I guess that's a good thing in this case?

PenguinSeph -- Hey, thanks a ton!
FoxBlitzz -- Aye, I plan on the the sprites being 8x8 or 8x16
Hideous -- Yeah, for some reason my editor hates certain people and I can't figure out why. o_O

2A03.org seems the place to be for homebrew NES music
http://www.2a03.org/forum/index.php

Maybe you can get permission from one of the artists on their forums to use some of their music.  Also, saw on their links a tracker called Nerdtracker II specifically for NES type music.

If it were me, given the timeframe and possible lack of tracker music making skillz, I'd use something like:

http://www.unfungames.com/mariopaint/

Yeah, technically SNESesque but some of the samples really do sound NESlike to me.  And you can't beat the easy to use interface!

P.S. I saw Princess Plum in that screenshot.  I'm surprised you actually liked one of the names ^_^  Just checked out SFXR and it does indeed rule the Triangle Wave World with an iron fist.

One of my friends suggested you keep the Yoshi clone as "Name" to make the thing look more like a bootleg.

I absolutely love the artwork on the character select screen. The dragon guy (Yoshi?) is one of those rare pictures that makes you laugh just from looking at it.
