Buddy Base II, a two-player only game for the NES (& flash).

Not particularly happy with the spy. Cheated on the medic and added an extra color. May make all the blacks on him the team color

Still not entirely sure on the gameplay. The players control a character each, and can spawn fairly stupid AI teammates which will just follow a basic behavior.

^Agree, it looks great. If you just copy scissor-paper-rock elements of TF2 (i.e. Demoman beats Sentry, Pyro beats Spy, Spy beats Medic+Heavy combo and so on) then you could create a pretty fun game. Tell me, how does one move between levels? Are there stairs, or does it just wrap around? I think the latter would be pretty awesome. Dunno how you'll implement the Spy's cloak on a single screen though. I guess just make him completely invisible, and then the player controlling him just has to guess at exactly where he is.

Cheers!

Yeh, the map levels wrap around. Keeps it simpler than ladders.

I'm not sure yet about the spy's cloak... maybe I'll treat it as a temporary invincibility, or make the AI characters ignore him when cloaked, even if the player can see him.

In my experience single-screen-multiplayer invisibility rarely if ever works. Either it's only a blur so the player himself can follow it but it also allows the opponent to follow just as easily, or it's full invisibility which can easily lead to the player himself losing track. In Smash Bros it sucked.

That is, IF you're gonna make it multiplayer-on-one-keyboard or something like that. Otherwise just make the enemies ignore him and give him a sort of shady effect.

Pass it off as a clever graphics trick.

Maybe there are elevators. Or escalators. The buddies in this base are probably into Elevator Action.

It's no coincidence that I'm working on an Elevator Action-style game already. Engine reuse FTW!

I too love the sprites. You should get together with Zachary Hinchliffe and Alevice to release the Tangerine Box (including the smash hits 50% ßiological Longevity, Super Portals 6 and Buddy Base II!)

seconding the tangerine box idea :D

this looks totally awesome, as for the invisibility, you could make use of both players being able to see, but only when the spy moves, then the other has to remember where the spy is lying in wait?

or spawn ais to distract while you sneak. it could work Smiley

Okay, we've gotta make this Tangerine Box happen.

Got the engine working okay. Only one class, non-playable, buggy jumps, etc., etc: http://isaacwilliams.net/uploads/buddybase2/proto01

Wouldn't the spy just change colour to match the enemy team?

Maybe I'm bonkers?

Actually, using the disguise instead of invisibility would solve the problem more elegantly. Solves the visibility problem, as well as allowing the player to blend in if the other player takes his eyes off the screen for a sec. Thanks!
