Done, done, and done.

I used dithering to express the beard textures, so that it doesn't look like a flat board. Revamping that was a bitch, and I don't know if I succeeded.

I like it, but... aren't dwarves supposed to be short?

Well, they're short but large, if you know what I mean. Wide.

Besides, accurately representing a dwarf's height in comparison to the other sprites given already would result in most attacks just  going over him. I think he looks very dwarfy. If anything, I would recommend making Naija larger.

I actually pictured the dwarf to be more like that dwarf from golden axe

But that looks pretty good too

Actually, now that you put those two together, I can see another thing: the colours are a little too saturated. The colours on the other sprites are all fairly muted. Not very muted, but still noticeably. That's easily solved, though.

But yeah, the dwarf's head is about twice the size of the other characters'. I think maybe he could do with being about 7/8 of Naija's height and a little more lithe, while still chunky. What do you all think?

Naija is the perfect size; she scales well with every other sprite submitted so far except the Dwarf and Sexy Hiker- the two most recently submitted sprites. Scale creep is bad! It makes animating a longer, more painful process!

And as long as the dwarf is at least 24 pixels tall (the height of Naija's waist), he shouldn't have too much of an advantage. He might be harder to hit in the air, but standard kicks and punches won't go over his head.

I think Naija's waist would be a bit too short. Maybe to her breasts?

If you go play Smash Bros. Brawl for example, you'll see that Mario's head is about twice as big as Link's.

I think that Dwarf sprite up there is great.

Mario's also much shorter than Link.

The point is, the dwarf's proportions are fine, but, as it stands, he's the largest character (besides Sexy Hiker and, presumably, Balrog). That doesn't seem quite fitting for a dwarf.

Redid it with those parameters, and here's what I got:

Back to the drawing board.

36-40 pixels would probably be best. 24 pixels is the absolute minimum height for a character. Any smaller and strange things start happening with the engine.

Honestly, I don't see the big deal. Dwarves are large. They're just short. "Stumpy" would be the word. But think about the other character's we're using. One's a worm. Quote and Curly are both have tiny sprites in Cave Story, and the concept art suggests that they're both about 14 years old. Gish is a blob.

In fact, most of the characters that are intended to be in brawl are pretty much tiny, or have similar sizes when you compare in-game shots. I think that it's less important that you get scale and proportion perfect, and more important that the characters look and act like the people they're based off of. Godsavant's sprite looks like a burly, angry dwarf, so I think it's pretty much perfect for the job.

Besides, Dwarves are powerhouses. They're tough, strong, and agile. I think the size is in proportion with the strength and toughness of the dwarves in DF.

PS: The dwarf should unofficially be named "Captain Ironblood". If you don't get it, don't ask.

I stick by what I said. 7/8 of Naija's height would probably be ideal. I think making it much shorter than that is just silly.

Well, after half an hour's work, I managed to shave him down ONE PIXEL shorter.

Yay me.  Beer!

To be honest, I don't like it that much; I need to rework the outline on the back of his hair.

EDIT: k here you go.

and make that TWO PIXELS.

I tried to rescale the dwarf as well as I could. In the process, I kind of screwed up the shading, but you get the idea.
