Well after a year and a bit of work, lots of stress, effort, debugging, tweaking and general fussing, I'm finally opening up Gratuitous Tank Battles, my Tower-Defense/RTS/SIM hybrid for people to try out.

Buying the game now gets you the current beta, and steam keys will show up later.
The homepage is here
http://www.gratuitoustankbattles.com/index.html

or there is a youtube video here:

Interested to know what people think!
Cheers,

Always loved the tower defence genre, glad to see someone polishing the shit out of it!

the game seems very difficult although this may be because I'm still pottering about with the default units, I may be better building my own so I know how they're supposed to be used.

my only complaints this far in are that the tutorial blocks don't pause the game (in particular, by the time I read your instructions on how important collecting dog-tags are, they've gone), I had the night-vision tool-tip permanently etched into the playing field (even level changes didn't get rid of it) and that the game does not like alt+tab at all.

I was playing full screen on my primary monitor and accidentally clicked on an area that would have been on my 2nd monitor and the game minimized. I couldn't get it back at all, the music continued to play but the screen was black.

Cliffski, I love what you've done with this game and GSB. Way to take the game where it wants to go.

I see you've figured out the alt+tab bug, awesome.

As for the 2nd bug, I've since realised that those hints about night vision and such have an x in the corner to get rid of them. I think the problem was that it appeared behind the ui so the cross was covered.

It's been quite a while since I updated this thread, and the game has now moved on to version 1.006, and I'm heading down the road to a final release soon. I just uploaded a new video to youtube showing air strikes (which are new):

And I blogged about the other new stuff in the latest patch here
http://positech.co.uk/cliffsblog/2012/04/21/gratuitous-patch-battles-1-006/
but to summarise:
  •     Airstrikes are in! You only get them as defender, and be warned they can damage your units too, so aim carefully :D You need to unlock them before they are usable
  • There are some new augmentations available that work on defensive capabilities, such as boosting armor and shields etc.
  • Defensive AI now takes into account attacking unit movement and tries to build ahead of the enemy, not just right on top of them (which often means they built turrets too late, and were useless by the time they were built).
  • The tab key now cycles through all your divisions, if you have multiple ones set up, shift+tab reverses it.
  • New progress bars in the UI to show supplies and victory progress.

little screenshot showing the air strike GUI:
