(sorry for my bad english, I'm french but the game will be translated by a professional translater !)

I invite you to discover the first images of XENOID MAZE, a Shooter / Survival Horror on which I work since six weeks.

This project follows a small tech demo completed in late 2011, Sands of Doom :
http://www.naphelia.com/Unity3D/SandsOfDoom/WebPlayer.html

Presentation

In a context halfway between Super Metroide, Alien Breed and Space Hulk, you play Lysander, a futuristic soldier equipped with heavy armor on mission with his company on a ghost ship adrift in the vacuum of space.

Back from your observation mission on spaceship, you discover that the other members of your company were massacred. You're the only survivor and nobody little help you leave the board. Far away in the darkness, strange screams echo through the halls of frosty wreck ...

Characteristics

The game will be playable on PC, for one or two player on the same machine. It will be composed of 13 levels each with a different atmosphere. The overall lifespan is estimated at 5 hours per difficulty mode (3 in all).

The game relies on a Old School GamePlay, intuitive and nervous. Emphasis will be placed on the pressure that the player feel claustrophobic in the context of the ghost ship which he will flee as soon as possible to save his life.

Scenaristics cut-scenes will be placed between each levels of the game to accentuate this feeling by putting the player in emergency situations as a threat to flee or reaching a point in a given time.

The player will fight against 18 creatures and 5 different bosses and will dispose an arsenal of eight weapons, inspired by classic science fiction games to complete the adventure.

Development

As you can see, the project is well underway. The conceptual phase is fully completed. The main character and 7 creatures from the bestiary have already modeled and textured. A prototype of the game engine has been drafted over two days to develop a system of movement and synchronization leg / torso identical to that of AngryBot.

I think I will have finished the modeling necessary to start work on the game engine by the end of the month, I will keep you informed of progress of development on this forum, you can visit the official blog to :

Update on Development

First update of the project with the end of the modeling of the basic elements of the game. All the elements of the bestiary (finally composed of 16 creatures) have modeled and textured summers and the 8 weapons of the game.

The next step is programming the core game and the animation and the integration of elements produced. I will also stain work on a game interface clear and ineffective in the spirit of the game

the next update will be the occasion to unveil the game in action !

I highly recommend you rethink this project.

You've chosen a very standard game concept. This means you're competing directly against studios with hundreds of times more resources than you.

The only way an indie can succeed is by offering things that the big guys don't. Here's an article related to this topic:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6698/principles_of_an_indie_game_bottom_.php

Find something unique in your game which isn't in Halo, Gears of War, Space Marine, Alien vs Predator, DOOM, or Natural Selection and make the game about that. Because anyone who wants to play a space marine shooting aliens will always play one of those before they'll play your game. And it's not because those guys are better designers than you - it's because they'll outspend you by a factor of a hundred or more.

I once worked on a game for more than a year and got creamed by Counter-Strike. Don't make the same mistake I did.

To clarify: I'm not criticizing your work - only your market positioning strategy.

Best of luck.

Edit: I realize it's top-down, which is a bit less common. But you're still up against Alien Swarm and both the new XCOM games. And many others I haven't thought of...

I totally understand your point of view! I myself made the mistake on a previous project, and I am aware of the risk involved in developing a single set of this type.

But the project Xenoide Maze has an identity and an atmosphere all its own, I assure you. Besides it's not a huge project, I do not expect a fortune.

Finally, the project is based on a freeware flash I realized a year ago and reached to 2 million players to date.

the project: Doom Patrol

I just wrong, time will tell. Anyway thank you for taking the time to warn me, it's nice.

Good luck to you too in your projects!

Hm.. Dude, every game out there shares mechanics with other games. Of course Naphelia is up against competitors. Even those with less resources.

After two months of work, I am pleased to present the first video of XENOIDMAZE, my next game!

As shown in the video, the game's development is well advanced, all weapons and monsters have been compiled into the program and the interface is almost complete. The level presented in this video is a prototype, the levels of the game will be much deeper and immerse the player in a different context at each stage of the game

The next update will be accompanied by a playable demo! Probably available for the end of the week, your return on the game will allow me to tweak the gameplay before attacking the level design.

Finally, good news for owners of smartphones, the game will be released on Android after its release on PC.

Hello!

Some news from the project after two weeks of silence, the level design is more delicate work than I thought! Some pictures of the evolution of the first level:

The next step is compiling the level and the addition of visual finish, then I would spend the lightmaps.

I tried out the beta.  The combat was really repetitive and uninteresting.  You just hold down both mouse buttons and run backwards while spamming your weapons and hope the enemy dies before your speed boost runs out.  If it does run out, you're pretty much forced to take damage as you can't get away fast enough.  I found myself running back into the start room for every fight.  This isn't a good thing, the player should be required to fight in different shaped rooms rather than retreat during each fight.

I realize there's only 5 out of the total 13 enemies that will appear, but none of the ones in there so far required any more strategy than that.  I hope the other enemies you're planning on adding are more interesting.

The momentum on your marine makes it difficult to avoid projectiles.

Also, the camera angle makes it hard to see enemies when you're fighting them from the south, and easier when you're fighting them from the north.

I noticed player shots dissapear as soon as they go off the screen instead of hitting aliens that are off-screen, this isn't a good thing.

Overall it needs a lot of work in the gameplay dept. before I'd consider it worth playing.

you've surely noticed, news on the development of Maze Xenoid are scarce this time. I'm in achieving the levels, so I will not say too much in order not spoil the game !

Here are a small video of the level 2 of the game done on time or I work on level 3 which contains a little surprise that should appeal to fans of Metal Slug!
