See this article for info.

Thought I might as well set the powderkeg here and see what happens.

My personal thoughts are that this is abhorrent, and that we as a community need to be better about this shit.  I know that TIGS has had a fair amount of sexist bullshit spouted that has probably kept a lot of women away, and that just isn't acceptable.

I'm in total agreement- anyone that claims that sexual harassment is a part of any culture doesn't understand what they're saying. Trash-talking is one thing, but this goes above and beyond normal taste.

I think a lot of what the guy was saying was ridiculous. Between reading the PAR article and Ben Kuchera's tweets, I was pretty amazed by what people were saying to him and what was said in the live stream.

I can't believe someone would say that things like sexist talk and being mean are part of what makes the community the way it is. I understand jokes and that sort of thing, but watching the stream and following this story, it seems really of hand.

I don't get who would want to be part of a community like that.

I guess I am too new to TIGS to really see it or I don't read too much on here, but I hope that is no longer the case. It's such a bummer to witness and read about such things.

Wow, this is truly despicable, and I agree with the amount of sexist BS that TIGSForums have. (search female game designers in the search bar to see)

especially considering how low the female participation rate is in fighting game "communities" its pretty deplorable
not really surprising though

keep raising the awareness of how huge pricks like that are huge pricks i guess

maybe one day in the distant future there will be 50 50 men and women as warriors of controllers...

but stupid idiots that latch on to small things they enjoy like that, that are afraid of losing their small privilege
well they are stupid idiots what more is there to say

My town has a robust fighting game community. And not one of them is a sexist turd. I'd imagine this just another "media painting people with broad strokes" thing just like racial stereotypes. And for that matter, anybody who's seen a handful of win quotes or paid attention to character balance should already know that fighters have great respect for their females. I'm guessing it extends beyond the gameplay, too.

Yeah, I love his analogy,
"This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community...You can’t go to the NBA and say 'hey, I like basketball, but I don’t want them to play with a basketball, I want them to play with a football.' It just doesn’t...it doesn’t make sense to have that attitude, you know? These things are established for years."

So, sexual harassment is as ingrained a part of fighting games as the use of a basketball is to basketball.

I'm just going to put this out there, but I don't think he's the smartest guy out there.

How is this "media painting people with broad strokes"?  There is video of the asshole saying these things.  I hate your type of attitude.  It is not the media's fault for reporting on this inexcusable shit.

I'm not saying there aren't people like that, and that they don't deserve the off-screen equivalent of the gaming assbeating. What it does is paint "the community" as a number of those assholes - or at least in the case of this show, at least 1 in 8 of us.

the analogy is a bit over the top but a certain amount of sexism is kind of inherent to all larger communities dominated by males (and especially young males). i dont know a whole lot about fighting game communities but id wager it isnt any different for them. i think tigsource is actually relatively free of sexism compared to other gaming forums on the interweb. the best we can do is call people out on their bullshit and make sure to let them know their attitudes arent tolerated.

PS: We don't tolerate bigotry on TIGS, and that includes sexism.

That has become a lot more true recently.  I wasn't trying to reopen wounds, but there has certainly been ugliness in the past (and I know that it has led to multiple bans).

But the asshole was the one who painted the community that way.  The reporter didn't say "This community is full of sexism", he said ""This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community".  So, be mad at him, not the reporter.  As a member of the community you should be condemning him, and working to make this not the case.

I find the pathetic things people cling onto. I mean, okay, you have your right to make bad taste jokes, but the moment you are hanging around with is not okay with it, you simply stop. It's social interaction 101, damn. Don't go with pretenses that unrelated elements to the sport/activity are part of the community.

Somewhat related, whats with ugly long beards?

You are required by law to have a neckbeard if you are that stupid.
