nostalgia is a perfectly valid reason for liking something imo There's nothing wrong with nostalgia, but there's something wrong with any consensus formed by it.

So true and applies to so many things. It applies to anything anyone played when they were young. Old games are consistently and vastly overrated. There are a lot of old games that are underrated because nobody played them. JSR is not one of these - it's a game that barely anyone played and has built up this ludicrous reputation that the actual game can't match. There are some good things about it, but it's mostly just not a terribly great game.

What do you mean by that? The discussion was about perceptions of quality. A little-known game can only be underrated in this sense if it reached the totally wrong audience due to shitty marketing or some-such. JSR is not one of these - it's a game that barely anyone played and has built up this ludicrous reputation that the actual game can't match. There are some good things about it, but it's mostly just not a terribly great game.
If you mean to say that JSR can't live up to the hype generated by its small but audacious fanbase circle-jerking on the Internet all the time, then I agree. However, note that JSR was very well received by critics, game developers, and players in its day. Even the legit parts of the consensus say it's a great game. OoT was mentioned ITT. First played it around 2004, and I didn't care much for it, but I had to admit it was a "great game". Just not as great as it was made out to be.

Oot was copied as soon as it was out, that's why comparatively it looks less great if you played it after. However if you played the game as soon as it was out, almost every games after has his shadow to uplift. And to this day some achievement of the game has not been reach yet.
I still play jsr when I can too, I can't think of other game like it and my only grip is the dated camera system (combine with the weak but just enough collision feedback for wall jump/run) which create some imprecision some times when trying to chain movement.

Better a good old game than a crappy new one
Honestly I'd prefer they updated the UI though, because that's one part that hasn't aged well

i tried a dreamcast emulator just a few months ago and it was slow and glitchy as fuck so yeah
also i buy games legitimately when i can and prefer paying for a current-gen port over getting some old console from ebay just for the 3 or 4 games that interest me on it and having it collect dust on my shelf. same goes for old consoles i already own. im certainly not going to dig up my snes from fuck-knows-where and hook it up to my hd tv (complete with input lag) just to play yoshi's island or super mario world once every 2 years

JSRF had better level design, but the lack of time pressure sucked out most of the challenge (no other pressures were substituted IIRC). It's a decent game and a poor sequel. To be fair, the shift is understandable, since JSR is frustrating when you're starting out. But it gets better as you get better. i tried a dreamcast emulator just a few months ago and it was slow and glitchy as fuck so yeah

Interesting. I played through JSR once on NullDC (after ~10 times on a real DC), and it was flawless. This was on a merely decent machine I built in 2006. Was it Chankast you tried? You can download a copy of a game you already own with a clean conscience, whatever the law says.

I own JSR I just prefer JSRF's focus on speed. The spraying minigame really disrupts the game flow, IMO.
