So far I've only played Bastion, which didn't really click for me. I've downloaded the Avadon: The Black Fortress and Eschalon Book demos, which I will get too after I finish New Vegas's DLCs. These are the only independent RPGs I've heard about, besides the upcoming Dead State and The Banner Saga.
I'm looking for some hopefully not hybridized RPGs(ie no action) to play, but I can live. My preference is a focus on character development and ideas, like Ultima, Planescape: Torment, or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. But I also like silly stuff such as Wasteland or Fallout.
I see that the Avadon developer has made a ton of RPGs in Spiderweb Software. What do you all think of those? Are they more like Icewind Dale? Baldur's Gate? Or Ultima?

Firstly, Bastion is not indie and neither is New Vegas.(I'm assuming you meant Fallout: New Vegas) HOWEVER, if you want to hear about indie RPGs you can check out this blog: http://indierpgs.com/

Bastion indieness or lack thereof is quite debatable.

From what I understand the majority of Bastion's development was self-funded and done out of their houses. It was picked up close to release by Warner when they were showcasing it at festivals. I think it's more than fair to call it indie.

I'm not sure that its fair to call Bastion an RPG. Doesn't it have action-oriented gameplay, and isn't the character's role pre-defined? Isn't the point of a traditional role-playing game to...play a role?

First we debate Bastion's indieness, now we're on to debating what the definition of an RPG is and whether the moniker "role-playing game" should be taken literally... I haven't really played any indie RPGs, but you may want to check out The Spirit Engine.

I enjoyed The Spirit Engine. A hell of a lot of work went into it. It may be linear as all hell, but I'm okay with that.

In videogames RPG means a game that has character attribute progression, and sometimes a customizable character and a dialogue system. That's pretty much it. I totally agree that's a dumb term - I used to play a lot of tabletop RPGs, where you actually play the role of a character. That said, Bastion was pretty light on the RPG side. It was more of an action game with an interesting story.

Ooo, a freebie! Thanks. I enjoyed The Spirit Engine. A hell of a lot of work went into it. It may be linear as all hell, but I'm okay with that. I'm alright with that. Planescape: Torment isn't exactly non-linear and I love it. I'll check TSE out.

I love Spirit Engine, despite the linearity and the weird combat system. Graphics are lovely, so is the music, and the different party interactions in each combination are awesome. I would start with the second game, though. It's a completely different story, so knowledge of the first one isn't necessary.

Fair enough. I thought you were staying in the "indie RPGS" context when you said that. Sorry for starting the semantics debate. it was inevitableAnyway, I think you'll find indie RPGs are pretty uncommon due to their typically grandiose scope. A few: Ark 22, Wanderlust: Rebirth, Hack Slash Loot, 100 Rogues, Dubloon(also check out the other games by that developer, whose name is Banov)

Spiderweb Games are a given. They may take some getting used to but they're about as RPG as they get with heavy text driven storie. They're great fun. In further news: Despite people hating on RPGMaker, big time, there are quite a few gems around. Most follow the typical JRPG Route, so if you hate that kinda thing, you might want to stay clear. Otherwise, there's some treasure RPGs to be had here. Sadly most recommendations I could give are in german so probably not that much of a help to you. You might try Eternal Eden, Exit Fate, Last Scenario, perhaps some Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis (was recommended to me recently, didn't try it yet). If you DO speak german try Vampires Dawn I&II or Unterwegs in Düsterburg. There's some crude humor in them but they're overall great games. Also you could browse the frontpage using the RPG Tag, like so: http://www.tigsource.com/?s=rpg
