Sounds awesome. As much as y'all need to get on Deus Ex already, I'm gonna name a few that I'd like to get into the mix: Shenmue 2, King's Field (the one that was on PS2), Zone of the Enders 2, and Deadly Premonition. Pick one of these please.

Thinking on this overnight, I think maybe it's best to start off with a freeware indie title for the PC because it ensures everyone can participate regardless of cost, platform or ability to emulate.

Games on my "unplayed" list that fit this criteria:

Rokko Chan (Browser based) http://king-soukutu.com/flash/rokko.html
Arzea (browser based) http://jayisgames.com/games/arzea/
Treasure Adventure game http://www.robitstudios.com/treasure-adventure-game/
Hydra Labyrinth http://hkcomplex.tumblr.com/post/7507872709/hydracastlelabyrinth
Split Party http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?uid=8804
Mario ROM Hacks (Normal Mario Bros, Time and Place, Super Mario Ghost and Super Mario Prank are the ones I intended to play) http://l.j-factor.com/emulation/

The Labyrinth (More of a riddle than a proper game, I am only halfway through Labyrinth 2 and haven't made more progress. Labyrinth 1 took me over a year to finish, but working with a big team it could go very fast.) http://www.thepuzzlefiles.com/

Since I haven't played any of the above, it's hard to recommend one of them but I'd certainly play one if everyone else wanted to play as well. A short game (like a browser title) might be really appropriate, since we can all play through in a week and then discuss proper-like.

If I had to recommend a game I've already played for others to play and discuss, Deadly Rooms of Death: Architect's Edition (the original) is freeware, high quality and reasonably lengthy. I would not be playing through it again (I've finished it twice) but I think others would enjoy it if they have not already. http://forum.caravelgames.com/downloads.php

I personally would be in for buying a new game to discuss if it's one I haven't played before. I'll leave it up to Dustin to make the first pick since he came up with the concept. Then I may hijack this thread and pick the second title for review to be a game I want to finish.

Baldur's Gate 2

I'd be down for Shadows of Amn.

Indie games aren't worth playing.

We used to have TIGS Game Night, this would be a good opportunity to resurrect that.

Me too.

I don't want to have to buy a game, but I guess I will if I have to...

Regarding this, maybe change it from "play until you beat" and more "play for a week, discuss your thoughts"?

Sounds fun, something I like about playing new games is that there's a community of people playing it. It kind of adds to the experience.

OK, so I don't know how to turn this into a poll (if someone else can or someone can tell me how to that'd be great Smiley ) so I'll just list some of the options I've heard and people can vote on which one they'd like to play first...

The options seem to be...

Baldurs Gate 2 -  people seem interested but the game is really long...

Deus Ex -  a good length, but lots of people have played it already so may be a better choice for a later game

time and place (mario rom hack) - super easy to get, can be played by everyone, no one seems to have played it, good length, only negative would be I don't know if people are interested in it

monkey island - classic game with a good length

mother 3 - lots of people had it on their lists in the backlog thread, short for an rpg but still on the long side

Or I can just pick one if you guys want.

Yeah I think this is a good idea, I might make it 2 weeks though since I know I have (and I assume other people do) trouble making serious progress in a game in one week.  Or if we pick a short game (like time and place) we could just make it one week.  Also limiting the time means if a game comes up that your not wild about it won't be to long until the next one starts.

I could set up an IRC channel for this later if anyone is interested. Would be good for live feedback/chatting about the games.

or a voice chat for those who don't like playing games in windowed mode... although that would probably take away from some games

I think trying to play a game with just the IRC chats and forums would be interesting (i.e. an adventure game with no walkthroughs, SaGa game without GameFAQs). Something where everyone can help contribute to each other's play experience- on that note, something like Alpha Protocol where you can have radically different play experiences would be cool.

Final Fantasy 12 was designed specifically so that very rare random elements would only be uncovered by sharing with other players. Somebody finds a rare monster in the jungle that drops a great item, and they share with their friends so everyone can get it.

Playing the original Zelda this way could be good too. The burn-and-bomb method of finding secrets is tedious on your own, but if you split it up among several players it turns into a fun social event.

I feel like we had a topic about that ages ago. I feel like I've already made a post like this sometime far in the past.
