I was told by a certain Ashkin
to set up a devlog. So here I am.
I'm currently working on a procedurally generated world. You can follow my Tumblr
, but I'll also attempt to update this thread as well.
This was a vague description I posted last week
Think Minecraft mixed with Proteus and Zelda, with Tolkien, Miyazaki and Hiroshige in there as well. Think of a world that exists despite of the player and is on the whole indifferent to their existence.
I think the most amazing thing about generated terrain is the unexpected results of a computer blindly following a set of rules. If you look at my first tumblr posts (like this one
), you'll see some of my first attempts at generative landscapes. I found it was highly addictive just refreshing the program to see all the random different configurations of the houses. I'd love to be able to do that on a larger, more complex scale.
I'm now collaborating with three developers who are kindly going to to help me turn this crazy ambitious thing into a reality. I'm really excited to see where this goes.
Here's some concept art to give you a taste of what we'll be aiming for, there's loads more on my blog
And here are some early tests, although we've decided to go back to square on with the way we're going to be generating the landscape:
Here's a mockup (not implemented) of how I envisage the starry sky to look:
