Been awhile since I've posted anything. Here's a guy I drew today and the steps I went through. Not really sure how to turn this into a side or rear view, so that's the next challenge. I put an afro on him at the end for fun  Smiley

I'm also not really happy with his feet/shoes.

seems like you have a LOT of colours there, i cant even count half of them on the actual guy.

For instance, why not make the lighter colour on the shirt, the highlight in the hair and the highlight on the skin all the same colour? and i've NO idea where all those dark colours are.

Most of your colors are too much alike, and don't show up at all.
Remember, contrast is key! Especially in small sprites like these.

Secondly your shading (except the shading on the shirt and the afro) is making your sprite look flat. Think of your sprite as an 3d object.
In small rpg sprites, a topdown light source is normally the best way to depict daylight.

In short:
1: You are using too many colors.
2: Your sprites are lacking contrast.
3: Incorrect shading and highlights.
4: Weird sprite angle.

Here's a quick redo of your sprite. I hope it helps.

Played with your edits some, my shading is.. not right at all.

Do you know of a tutorial or a way for me to practice this so I can get it right?
