So I never posted this here after I finished but figured it would probably be a smart idea.

so here is my very small godzilla-fied roguelike. I need some help and would like to clean the game up a lot. so let me know of any bugs you find.

Instructions:

you are a Kaiju monster. Destroy all 5 cities to be crowned King!

Controls:
Arrow Keys to move
Space to use a superpower or restart after death

Powers:
powers are bracketed by the amount of HP you have. as you get weaker, your spells get stronger.

1 - 3 health
Fireblast: destroys anyhting in a 5x5 grid around you.
4 - 6 health
Fireball: Destroys anything it touches choose direction after space.
7 - 9 health
Roar: take no damage for 3 turns.

Buildings:
destroy all buildings to move onto the next level. walking into a red building heals you and walking into an orange one refills your current power.

Thanks for Playing and I had fun making this. I would love some feedback as I hope to do a bug fix build very soon addressing some of the larger problems. (Like perhaps adding a wait command, and making the game a little more player friendly)

I like it.  It took me a few minutes to figure out the significance of the building colors, but that's probably just because I wasn't paying attention.  I managed to finish the game and it would have been more satisfying if there were some sort of reward for doing so, even if it's just a little cut scene of fleeing citizens or something like that.  Overall, I didn't run into any bugs and the gameplay kept me interested long enough to make it all the way through.

whenever I talk to my japanese friends i tell them to call me kaijuuou. I hope you understand that naming a game with my name means the game better be damn good. I will check this game out later. Expect this post to contain feedback very soon.

Your life is on the line, human. well more like someone is going to scold you on the internet if the game isnt good

I love the graphical style! Did you try to make the game feel more "real-time" despite being turned based on purpose? Because it feels pretty real-time despite working with turns.

Ha, I thought the same thing. Didn't read much before playing, so I went in thinking that the dude just had some funky controls. That said, I did enjoy it. It's impressive how seamless the turns felt. Graphics are great too.

Games turning out great, like the new power system that's linked with energy and took me a second to release the link between the colour of buildings and what they do but think it's a nice simple feature. Will have to play again to come up with some more helpful feedback.

thanks guys. I tried to make the game as fast as possible while still being turn based.

so right now I dont think the game is very replayable, but I want to make sure that I am not bias. So would you play again after winning? and what would make you play again?

A variety of different looking structures could help. Even if it's just a visual difference with no tangible effect on gameplay. Or maybe an entirely different monster with different abilities. Cthulhu? Ha.

I have thought about making other monsters and I have a list of other special powers that I chose the current 3 out off, but was hoping to figure out some replayability with just one monster, before I went in and added other monsters. I could probably do other buildings no problem. maybe do like to different type of health buildings. one heals 1 and the other heals 3. making them different sizes might help with that idea.

maybe you should call this game "kaiju kid" because upon playing this i did not feel like a king. I felt naked and weak. i walked along, clumsily crushing weak human buildings on my path, dreading the appearance of those metallic doors. surrounded by those little metal tanks i felt so vulnerable, they just keep coming out. sometimes my ROAR EVEN FAILS ME OMG WHO PROGRAMMED THIS and half the time i have to get hit once before getting the chance to step on them... dancing a doomed dance with that little tank

i am no king... i am just a bald red lizard... help me...

I think this game has a lot of potential, here's a few thoughts I had while playing.

1. I like the art style a lot, this looks fantastic, It would be nice if I could choose between a few different monsters, with different abilities.

2. Controls need a little work. If this is going to be a rougelike type thing, assign the abilities to different keys. I was confused by the space bar does something depending on your health level mechanic and many times I was just left sitting there bashing spacebar with nothing happening, even though I was being hunted by tanks! And having to take damage before I could do something different was annoying.

3. Items? It'd be cool to pick things up or eat things Rampage style, and get power ups or new abilities from that.

4. Definitely needs some kind enemies taking their turn meter, it felt like the game was freezing, but it was just moving tanks.

I really like the graphics on this one, but I think that to truly capitalize on the feel of the old kaiju monster movies there should be several choices of player monster? Maybe riffing on some of the classic monsters such as Mothra and Godzilla (obviously no Cloverfield!)

wow guys thanks for all the feedback.

I would have liked to make other monsters, but I only had 7 Days to do everything so I could only get one in.

Farmer: It felt strange to assign the powers to separate keys as one of the points I wanted was that you could only use one power at a time, and that was based on your health level.

I got around to playing this today. I think I made it to city 4 (I actually got excited when I finished it because I had thought it was city 5 heh). It felt really well done, if a bit light (a common side-effect of rapid development) and, between the light atmosphere, the fast pace, and the simple gameplay, it was really fun.

Agreed on more monsters though. Tongue

I thought the way powers worked was pretty cool. At first it didn't make sense that the more powerful powers were reserved for lower health, but I guess it was created in relation to a relative level of "survival instinct" or something similar?
