Just wondering what are some good procedurally generated action games out there? I mean "shooter" in the broadest sense: FPS, top-down twin stick, side scrolling shootem-up, etc. There are a lot of procedural adventure games, like Minecraft and Terraria and Rogue-likes, but I don't know of many shooter-focused ones.

Binding of Isaac kinda counts. Any other good ones?

This is a fantastic game and the first procedurally generated shooter I really was into.

Parsec47 is pretty awesome: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/p47_e.html
Different but also awesome: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/rr_e.html

(IMO most of Kenta Cho's games are worth checking out, some aren't procedural but are still amazing)

I forget if Area2048 is random or not... but again, worth checking out: http://homepage2.nifty.com/isshiki/a2k.zip

Ahh too many games!! But really thanks for all the replies Toast Left I will try to check them all out. I'd like to make a randomly generated DOOM-like one day, so just wanna get an idea of what's out there.

Interestingly enough, there's a level generator for Doom called OBLIGE, infinite Doom levels!

Yeah, I'm planning to check that out too. This would be mostly a design exercise for myself, and hopefully it'll turn out kewl!

Since you say procedurally generated, I wonder if you looked up the old procedurally generated compo? Self Destruct by Terry Cavanaugh and Annabelle Kennedy is a lot of fun, but brutally difficult. Also, it's more the enemy waves that are random, not levels but still.

Yeah, OBLIGE is amazing, and if you use it with Aeons Of Death (which is a huge bundle of weapons and enemies from several old school first person shooters), you get ultimate randomization. Its very frantic and fun, give it a try.

Also, loving your avatar pic from the snes Shadowrun game, JimmyJ.  Wink

Golly, you recognize my avatar, and love playing OBLIGE maps with AEoD! We're like peas in a pod.
