I would like to have suggestions for relatively simple 3D game engine / editors which would allow first person view mechanics.

I have experience with RPG Maker and Game Maker, so the editor should be quite preferably at the same challenge level. I know GM has some 3D capabilities but I have very little experience or knowledge about its features or how difficult it is.

It doesn't need to have a lot features, basic events and support for sound and custom made 3D meshes like .obj or .3ds. Even texturing support are not required.

I know some heavy duty solutions like UDK and CryTech, but they are way too complicated and over the top considering my needs. I also had FPS Creator for while, but it seemed totally impossible to import your own meshes into it. Also there is Blender engine, but I have no intentions to learn that program since I am 3DS Max user.

Thanks for advance...

Unity?

Too complicated I am afraid.

That's very nice indeed, but it is block-based system so it doesn't fit my needs.

BGE maybe, though unity really should be simple enough - it doesn't get much easier  Concerned

I have to agree that as far as 3d engines go, Unity is one of the easier ones to use from a non-programmers perspective. You can go from a new project to something interactive in a matter of minutes. It is pretty complex compared to Game Maker, but that's just the nature of 3d engines. If you find one that is simpler yet just as flexible, let us know!

But based on your feedback so far in this thread, it seems like your best bet is just to come to grips with Game Maker's limited 3D capabilities.

I know nothing about this program, but I saw it in another thread:

Platinum Arts Sandbox Free 3D Game Maker
(It is fun, free, open source and makes it easy for kids and adults to make their own games! The goal is to make it accessible to kids but also powerful enough for full game projects. With a simple click and roll of a mouse wheel users can modify the world however they want.)

What are your needs exactly?
What is it you want to make (level geometry-wise)?

ZGameEditor might be exactly what you want. Simple, 3D and imports 3ds files.

This might very well be exactly what I am looking for. I have to study this further. Thanks!

Unfortunately, most engines don't focus on extreme simplicity as a selling point. If you want an engine for first-person games, your best bet is to simply pick an existing first-person engine, and run with it.

I could point you towards the Cube 2 engine. (Sauerbraten) This is a capable and largely free engine with some relatively easy-to-use level editing tools. And of course there is the Platinum Arts Sandbox, a game engine extrapolated from Cube 2. This is the simplest option I can think of that isn't the Blender Game Engine, or Unity.
