It seems that there are a lot of ambitious ideas with this new game.

I wonder if notch will use alpha funding like what he did with Minecraft.

Yeah, like many, I'm not sure about the monthly sub either. But you never know, it might be really cheap.

Going back to the cpu, I was thinking earlier if it's going to be a fully emulated affair I wonder if people would be able to make and transmit viruses to other peoples ships.

And apparently you will be able to do that according to his twitter

And I won't stop viruses, the players will have to do that themselves.

So that's kinda cool. And by kinda I mean very. For some reason that prospect excites me.

A lot of people would presumably use software that other people had written. Part of the metagame would then be finding vulnerabilities such as buffer overflows that work against whatever software became commonplace or intentionally trying to proliferate software with backdoors.

Not that that idea hasn't been done before .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_War

Edit: Found an even more relevant example http://www.ceebot.com/colobot/game-e.php

and maybe a software market parallel to the game emerges, where all kinds of viruses / antiviruses / tools are exchanged.

also tons of "robot battle" gams. to be fair i don't believe it's been done in conjunction with space exploration (where the computer controls your spaceship) yet.

It's different in that in Core War there's no wider context to give the software purpose beyond trying to kill the other program. 0x10c could potentially get quite close to representing the genuine fundamentals of cyberwarfare.

Depending on how integrated the computer is with your ship, we might see people trying to distribute programs that sabotage the ships engines or life support systems (if it goes to that level of detail of course.) Kiss

Notch had to remove the Twitter feed because so many people were retweeting the negative comments posted by The Best Gamers that linked to this article.  Whoops!  That was supposed to be for free viral marketing, gamers, not to talk about the game!  A logo is a proof of concept, right?  What is rendering the logo, anyway?  YTMND?

On the monthly fee, I think Notch woke up on fine Swedish morning and said to himself, "What if I could create a game where everyone who bought Minecraft had to give me the price of Minecraft every month?"  Then dollar signs appeared in his eyes and a cash register noise was heard and Notch said he's going to do just that.

If you're excited about this based solely on the fact that it's being made by Notch, then that is probably the absolute worst reason to get hype for this.  I love the wild, wide-eyed speculation going on in this thread.  Because Notch is really one to reach for the fucking stars when it comes to design.

Also, where is Scrolls?

I would have thought that most people in this thread were intrigued due to the gameplay possibilities that the game would provide in heed of the proposed features and not the fact that this game is being developed by Notch. But then maybe that's just me.

Preaching to the choir a bit. We aren't exactly Notch fanboys here, especially since Minecraft started on these forums in the first place (well, in IRC).
