Come on, lets be fair and square here, it could be several magnitudes of worse. They could have named it "Yogcraft".

Yogscast always came off to me as obnoxious and pompous. They're really annoying to listen to.
I can't get myself to understand why people enjoy their videos, but apparently there is something to it. Maybe it's analogous to why people enjoyed the show Jackass.

Oh my, I just now noticed you're the eldpack guy. I've been using your texture pack for the longest time. Right now everyone seems to be focusing on 32x and higher but you remained faithful to the classic 16x. Big kudos to you. Thanks! Need to get that updated soon enough, but I went all "screw you notch! I'll just make my own game!!"

So for someone uninitiated: What is this Yogscast and why is it so huge (from what I understand)

They have this youtube video series that eventually turned into a storyline where their randomly chosen dwarf+william riker goes on an adventure constructed by friends and fans in minecraft. They believe they are to be attributed to the success of minecraft, while it might just as well be the other way around, minecraft exploded and so did their videos as an effect.

I think what they said at Minecon was something to the effect of "we have a hand in Minecraft's success" and people thought they meant themselves when they actually meant "we" as in the community surrounding Minecraft and all the mods and stuff that have come from there.

I believe some unkind or poorly-chosen words were spoken between the Yogscast peeps and Notch, in both directions, along with plenty of misunderstanding and a good dose of flame fanning from some third parties. I think it got both sides in a bit of a huff with the other for a bit, and I'm not sure the ill feelings have gone away entirely. I think it happened around the time of the big event near Minecraft's official release date. Someone might to be able to elaborate a bit. All I can remember was some twitter post that got a fair few people talking. EDIT: I should just elaborate that this is probably more of an explanation as to why some things might be touchy with respect to Yogscast and Minecraft, as opposed to any explanation as to who Yogscast are and their place in the world.

yes minecraft is successful because of yogscast, not the fact that both the pr teams for valve and infinity ward mentioned it at pretty much the same time. said time being when the game started actually making sales.
hmmmmmmmmm
How the fuck did that happen anyways? Valve just randomly decided to make a post praising Minecraft for no reason... that's unprecedented. It could have happened espontaneously, but maybe they had a deal? Maybe someone at Mojang knew someone at the tf2 team? I don't know, it is just really weird.

why are they even a thing though, can anyone offer me an adequate psycho-social explanation for a collective of people making money from videos of themselves playing minecraft, a game i don't have the patience to watch myself play

if you're going to do the conspiracy theory thing you also have to recognize that valve tried to buy minecraft from notch shortly after it became popular; but it was too late by then and he realized he'd make more money just keeping it independent. that's why valve bought and hyped terraria instead

people make money of themselves playing league of legends, and starcraft. basically it works like this: if there is a thing that is popular, people will pay not only for that popular thing itself, but for anything surrounding or related to that popular thing. sometimes the things surrounding that popular thing make more money than the popular thing itself. example: the transformer toys made more money than the actual transformers cartoon
